Manchester Go-Ride Racing League Returns

Managers and coaches of Manchester clubs such as the Eastlands Velo, Manchester Triathlon, North Manchester Cycling Club, and Manchester Wheelers have come together to form the Manchester Go-Ride Racing League (MGRRL).

By taking full advantage of the opportunities available through British Cycling’s Go-Ride Racing programme, previous  events within this league have been overwhelmingly successful, but what is more interesting is looking forward to 2011.

The MGRRL in 2011, supported by Manchester Go-Ride Coach Tom Hodgkinson, will provide novice cyclists under the age of 16, the opportunity to race against each other in a bid to assist their transition between school/club coaching and open Regional competition. While school and club coaching enhance the skills and knowledge of amateur riders, Go-Ride Racing provides the catalyst for an enjoyable racing experience – which is one pathway to successful racing in Open Regional competition.

The plan for 2011 is jam-packed with competitions and races covering the six recognised disciplines of BMX, Road Racing, Cycle Speedway, Mountain Biking, Cyclo Cross, and Track. This will include 10 events, linking to two major national events, three regional leagues and one county event – opening up a wealth of possibilities for racing and experience to be gained for young novice level riders, providing an insight into the next stages of the competition pathway.

Tom Hodgkinson, Go-Ride Coach: Manchester is full of credit for the clubs in Manchester coming together to enhance the league, saying: “The clubs in Manchester supporting the Go-Ride Racing League have made it very easy for anyone to get involved in any aspect of British Cycling’s Go-Ride programmes – from Go-Ride school session’s right through to race days.

“Go-Ride Clubs are the easiest way to get involved, and will be looking to attract new members through my schools work. The school club links will nicely feed young riders on to club coach-led racing sessions to enhance their competitive racing skills, and then onto race day itself. This seamless pathway of school sessions, moving to clubs, and attending race days will guide the riders through to Regional competition and gives them the experience they require”.

For further information on how to get involved, or if you would like to find out where your nearest Go-Ride club is, please see the new league website at www.mgrrl.com or contact Tom Hodgkinson, Manchester Go-Ride coach, using the details below.
