British Cycling has called London mayor Sadiq Khan’s new cycling budget “a further step forward” for transport in the capital.

Mr Khan met with British Cycling during his election campaign in February, when he told Chris Boardman that he wanted to make London “a byword for cycling” by increasing the proportion of transport spending on cycling.

Today, he has announced that investment in cycling in the capital over the next five years will be almost double the amount spent under his predecessor Boris Johnson.

Martin Key, British Cycling campaigns manager, said:

“The figures announced by the Mayor of London today are extremely encouraging, and represent a further step forward for cycling in London, building on the work done by former mayor Boris Johnson.

“When we met with Mr Khan in February, it was obvious that he recognised the importance of increasing cycling in London, and that cycling was a ready-made solution to many of the capital’s biggest problems, including congestion and pollution.

“To see him convert this into numbers and commit to a five-year plan is very pleasing, and demonstrates to politicians, decision makers and other incoming mayors around the country the role cycling must play in modern, forward-thinking cities and communities.”
