Cycling must be a safe and welcoming place for all.

Coaches, leaders and instructors working with children are required to have a recognised safeguarding or child protection qualification, such as British Cycling’s Safeguarding Awareness course,  in order to be insured by British Cycling alongside your qualification.

British Cycling and Scottish Cycling Safeguarding Policies

It is also recommended that non-qualification holders, for example volunteers working in a club environment or at events, undertake this vital training.

British Cycling’s Safeguarding Awareness course has been designed with child protection experts to provide a cycling-relevant training offer to ensure the cycling workforce is aware of safeguarding principles and best practice.

For those in Scotland, you are required to attend sportscotland's Child Wellbeing & Protection in Sport course. More information can be found here.

About the course

This course will help to raise your awareness of abuse and neglect, to recognise early signs that might indicate a problem and show you how to take action if you know or suspect that a child, young person or adult at risk needs help.

This three module course delivers three CPD hours and comprehensively covers child development, categories of child abuse, adults at risk responding to abuse and creating a safe environment.

The qualification will need to be renewed every three years.
