Having enjoyed great success in the first round of the Track Cycling World Cup in Manchester last month, the Great Britain Cycling Team are sending a smaller squad to Melbourne to continue to race for qualifying points for the Track Cycling World Championships in Copenhagen next March.

Of all the World Cups, Manchester was the big hit for Team GB and they came out of that competition with 15 medals and a win in the JKA Keirin. After the racing had finished, Great Britain had done enough to be named best team. A much smaller team is travelling to Melbourne to race for World Championship qualifying points.

No less than five Olympic medallists headed by World Record holder and Olympic Champion Ed Clancy are named in the twelve riders travelling to Melbourne in Australia for the event. The other Olympic medallists include Silver medallist Ross Edgar (Keirin), Silver medallist Wendy Houvenaghel (Women’s Pursuit), Bronze medallist Steven Burke (Men’s Pursuit) and bronze medallist Chris Newton (Men’s Points).

The other riders in the team for Australia also include the inform Matt Crampton who finished a close second to Chris Hoy in the Men’s Sprint at the Manchester World Cup and went on to win the Japanese Keirin. Silver medallist in the Kilometre at Manchester, Olympic Academy rider David Daniel travels to Melbourne as well along with another Academy rider, Jess Varnish.

Andy Tennant leads GB in the Team Pursuit at Manchester. Three of the four who raced at Manchester travel to Melbourne.

In the endurance squad, three riders who recorded a sensational 3.54 in the Men’s Team Pursuit final at Manchester, just outside the World Record from Beijing, travel to Melbourne; Ed Clancy, Andy Tennant and Steven Burke. They are supported by the very experienced Chris Newton who won Gold in the Points race at Manchester and young Olympic Academy rider Andy Fenn.

Two of the World Record breaking team from Manchester in the Women’s Pursuit, Wendy Houvenaghel and Jo Rowsell also go to Australia along with a young rider who is fast making a name for herself, Katie Colclough. The Academy rider won a Silver medal in the Under 23 Women’s European road race this year and last winter showed great speed and ability on the track with lots of medals in the Women’s Endurance events.
