Great Britain’s Alice Barnes finished 24th in the under-23 category at round one of the 2015 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup cross-country in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic.

The second year British Cycling Olympic Academy Programme athlete started on the front row of the grid, ranked fifth out of 51 competitors.

In only her second full season of world cup competition, Barnes held position on the start loop, crossing the line two seconds down on the leaders after ten minutes of racing.

After a strong start Barnes would come no closer to the head of the race however, slipping back through the order.

Eleventh at the end of lap one and one minute down on the leaders, Barnes’ pace waned again on laps two and three.

The 20-year-old rallied on the fourth and final lap, posting a time one minute quicker than her third circuit, however cruelly lost three further positions in a four-way sprint finish.

Crossing the line in one hour, 24 minutes 42 seconds, Barnes was seven minutes 24 seconds down on winner Jenny Rissveds from Sweden.

Competition continues tomorrow, featuring Grant Ferguson, Iain Paton and Mike Thompson in the under-23 men’s and Annie Last in the elite women – which will be broadcast live here at 10am.
