Ready to start your journey to become a commissaire?

It starts with the Trainee Commissaire course. This will give you all the foundational skills and knowledge to enable you to start your journey towards becoming a Regional B commissaire and take on officiating responsibilities in support of the chief commissaire at events.

What does the training involve?

Using a blended approach including online learning, tutor-led discipline-specific seminars and practical experience, you will be guided and supported along a journey to enable you to excel in the role as you complete your event-based practical experience.

Online learning - 4 hours

The online modules need to be completed before attending the trainee seminars. These modules are general, covering all disciplines, and include:

  • introduction to the role, qualities, and expectations of commissaires
  • safeguarding
  • risk management
  • commissaire tasks and responsibilities.

Seminars - Discipline-specific sessions - 2 x 2 hours

The discipline-specific sessions and follow the journey of a commissaire through their role before, during, and after an event. The course covers the areas below.

Planning: this covers anything a commissaire needs to know and plan for before the event day. This will include event information, personal planning, and communication with the event organiser and chief commissaire.

Preparation: this covers everything from arriving at the venue until the start of the competition. Depending on the discipline, topics include sign-on, call-up and gridding, equipment checks, pit set-up, risk management and event communication.

Competition: from the start of the competition to confirming the results, including, starting the competition, monitoring and management during the competition, through to timing and judging.

Post-competition: the last area covers the commissaire tasks after the competition has finished, including debriefing meetings, returning equipment, and writing reports.

Practical event-based training

Once you have completed both the course, you will be qualified as a Trainee Commissaire. You can then attend events to shadow and gain experience under supervision; the chief commissaire will provide you with feedback and complete your assessment/feedback at the end of each event.

Your Regional Sport Developer can support you, or put you in touch with the right person, to arrange attending events. There may also be mentors available, as well as support and advice from your peer commissaires. You can find your Region's Sport Developer through this page.

As your experience and confidence in the role develop, and once your assessments are satisfactorily completed, you can apply to become a Regional B Commissaire.

As a Regional B Commissaire, you will be able to take on officiating responsibilities in support of the chief commissaire at events.

How much does it cost?

The course is free as you will be supporting cycle sport events as a commissaire in future.

How long will the course take to complete?

The initial training - including online learning and classroom/seminar - will take at least three weeks from enrolling.
