Our coaching scholarships – made possible thanks to support from our Official IT and Digital Partner, Total Computers – aim to give motivated individuals the chance to excel as a coach.

The Total Computers Scholarship launched in 2022 with an intake of 18 scholars, who have since had access to British Cycling qualifications, a coach developer, coaching opportunities with the Great Britain Cycling Team and Talent teams, unique development experiences at major events and access to a community of scholars on a similar journey. 23 scholars are starting a journey with us in 2023.

What’s included in the scholarship?

  • Funded access to British Cycling education courses, relevant to your aspirations,
  • A personalised development programme,
  • Mentoring from an industry expert,
  • Unique access to opportunities across our talent pathway,
  • Supporting skills to future-proof your career.

All opportunities are designed to run concurrently with commitments such as study, employment or care on a part-time basis.

Who can apply

In year two of this four-year programme, we are inviting applications from individuals who are:

  • residents of England, Wales or Scotland aged 18 or over
  • passionate about cycling and ideally already coaching, leading or volunteering (across any discipline) – if not already coaching, you will need to specify where you will be able to coach if successful
  • able to commit to a two-year, part-time learning programme starting in January 2023
  • able to travel to opportunities as part of the scholarship and cover associated costs - however, your programme of development will be created in unison and flexibility can of course be accommodated where required.

We welcome applications from all sections of society, whether you are an existing British Cycling qualified coach or just looking to get started on your journey. The scholarship is most applicable to aspirant career cycling coaches due to the level of commitment required to make the most of the scholarship, but your development journey will be specific to your aspirations.

Why the scholarships are important

British Cycling and Total Computers are passionate about using this partnership to grow inclusivity within cycling, with a key focus on improving the diversity of the coaching workforce. Attracting a broader range of coaches bolsters the range of experience available to developing cyclists and makes cycling accessible to groups, communities and individuals who may previously have considered it was not for them.

Currently, just 2% of the coaching workforce are from a minority ethnic background, 22% are female and 5% are under 30. In 2022, 50% of scholars recuited were female and 27% from diverse ethnic groups.
