Coaching and Education is delighted to be working in partnership with BASES to deliver the Power: Understanding Cycling Performance workshop on 17 June 2015 in Manchester.

British Cycling is known for continually looking for marginal gains in performance to keep us at the forefront of the sport at world level and sports scientists are integral to the Great Britain Cycling Team, contributing to this innovative work and our ongoing success. Sport and exercise science is the application of scientific principles to the promotion, maintenance and enhancement of sport and exercise related behaviours. For many of our coaches working at the performance end of the sport, access to sport science services is a key part of their development and specialisation.

It is very important that sports scientists understand the sport of cycling and how coaches are likely to use their services. Therefore, we are delighted to be delivering the Power: Understanding Cycling Performance workshop for the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES). BASES is the professional body for sport and exercise sciences in the UK.

The workshop is targeted towards sports scientists who are undertaking BASES supervised experience or providing scientific support within a cycling or triathlon context. Coaches working within a performance environment who have an advanced knowledge of sport science principles may also attend.

Lead presenter, Coaching and Education Officer Dr Andy Kirkland, said of the opportunity:
“It’s very exciting to be delivering a workshop in partnership with BASES. Coaches and sports scientists have a common goal; to enhance the performance of the athletes they work with, however they sometimes follow different and diverging paths in attempting to do so.

“We developed the workshop to help sports scientists better understand the role of cycling coaches and how to apply sports science services within a world leading programme. The workshop also introduces the fundamentals of power measurement during training, racing and in the laboratory.”

Opening the workshop will be Heiko Salzwedel, the Head of Endurance on the Great Britain Cycling Team Podium Programme. Heiko is a coach of international renown, having worked with many top riders including Bradley Wiggins, and will talk of his experiences in high performance sport, how he has used power measurement and his perspective of the role of sports scientists.

Dr Len Parker Simpson (physiology) and Joe Hewitt (strength and conditioning) from the English Institute of Sport will present on the way they provide integrated support to the men’s and women’s Team Pursuit and Mountain Bike squads, informed by event demands. They will also run a question and answer session at the end of the workshop.

Further details of the workshop are available on the BASES website. If you have any questions on the workshop or your suitability to attend, please contact the coaching and education team on 0161 274 2060 or via email at coaching@britishcycling.org.uk.
