In June 2018 we came together with our colleagues at Cycling UK, Living Streets, Ramblers and Sustrans to present Moving the Nation; comprising a number of shared goals and a Vision for Tomorrow to help make cycling and walking the natural choices for short journeys.

The document, which was shaped by the respective CEOs of the five organisations, detailed five clear goals:

  1. Every town and city is served by a core network of segregated cycle routes and networks of walkable routes to and within centres.
  2. Every community has access to green spaces and is connected by traffic-free cycling and walking networks for all.
  3. Every rail and bus station is attractive for people travelling on foot or by bike, and has facilities that prioritise cycling and walking.
  4. Every child is able to walk and cycle to school in safety and with confidence, gaining essential life skills.
  5. Everybody has opportunities to take up walking and cycling, through programmes in schools, workplaces, and local communities.

We know that these are the core foundations of some of the happiest, healthiest cities in the world; places like Copenhagen and Amsterdam where cycling and walking is simple, attractive and safe.

Only through working towards these goals will the Government be able to deliver the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS) in its entirety – to double cycling, increase walking, reduce the number of cycling casualties and get more kids walking to school.

Following the publication of Moving the Nation, in November 2018 the alliance presented a joint response to the Department for Transport’s 50-point Action Plan on cycle safety, which you can see here.
