A number of Welsh Cycling affiliated clubs have been successful in receiving funding applications over the past few months thanks to Sport Wales Community Chest & Development Grant schemes.

In the last quarter the schemes have funded nine schemes across Wales totalling £34000 to help more people access our sport.

One such recipient of over £5000 of funding was Builth Wells based Bulls cycling club who received the funds that will allow them to purchase bikes and storage equipment which in turn will help increase the number of local young riders who can access the sport and flourish with the support of the local HSBC UK Go-Ride club.

We asked the Bulls Stuart Davies about the process and how the grant would help the club.

Why did the club feel the need to apply for the funding?

As a small club funds are tight to deliver a range of activities for young people in the local area to access and it was felt that an application for a Development Grant would greatly help the club to grow by enabling us to have a proper hub from which the club could deliver activities from.

What do you hope the grant will help achieve for the club?

The grant will enable the club to grow not only in terms of members but the number of accessible sessions that the local young people of the area can access as well as providing mechanisms to help support a young rider’s journey into the sport for more of the year.

The grant will provide the foundation on which the club can continue to grow and secure the longer term future of the club.

How did you find the application process?

Fine, I actually quite enjoy writing these kind of bids because the format makes you think more in depth about a longer-term strategy for the clubs development. I also enjoyed working in partnership with the Powys Senior Sports Development Officer as she brought in other ideas to help strengthen the application and the wider plans for cycling in the authority.

Our project will complement the existing project being rolled out in the Builth Wells catchment area which has seen the roll out of a Balance ability scheme across all schools where pupils can learn the basics and provide the foundation to take the first steps into the sport and hopefully into the club.

We will be looking to spend the funds over the coming months and really hit the summer and help more people take part in the sport, more details will follow soon.
