Victoria Pendleton will look to build on the foundations laid at the London World Cup with more work on sprint tactics ahead of the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Melbourne.

The Great Britain Podium Programme rider, who forms part of the 15 rider squad for April’s competition, admitted that the main core of her work so far has been focused on fitness. The 31-year-old competed in the team sprint, setting a new world record with Jess Varnish, in addition to the individual sprint and keirin in a congested three days of racing at the Olympic Velodrome.

“I haven’t really done a lot of sprint tactical training yet - that’s the next phase between now and the worlds and the Olympics because generally you have to build on the rest of the foundations before you get there. There is no point in practising tactics if you haven’t got the legs to perform it properly,” the Olympic gold medallist said.

“For me I’m still in a heavy training phase, I wasn’t going to taper for the London World Cup in the way I would for the worlds or the Olympics, it’s too early,” she added.

Pendleton also maintained that she would compete in all three sprint events at the Games - the team sprint, individual sprint and keirin - rebuking suggestions that training for all three could be detrimental and highlighting that there was still five months until the track cycling Olympic events began.

She commented: “August is a long, long way away for us so there is no point in rushing anything - you have to get the foundations right before you get there. I’m sticking to my guns; you can’t develop every aspect of all three events all the time to be race fit, so one step at a time.”
