Laura Kenny got proceedings off to a dramatic start on the third day of competition at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Berlin, crashing out in the scratch race, the first race of the omnium event.

Having broken her shoulder at the final round of the world cup series less than a month ago, Kenny once again proved she was made of tough stuff and carried on with the competition despite limited medal hopes, taking advantage of the learnings that could be gained by racing against an Olympic standard field.

Kenny got stuck straight into the tempo race next, finishing eighth, before taking on the elimination race in which she finished in 11th. This meant she then went into the final race, the points race, ranked 15th overall but a strong and gutsy performance meant allowed her to overtake some of her competitors on the rankings to finish in 12th place overall.

After the race Laura reflected: “It just wasn’t my day today, but I’m glad I got back up and raced. I came here to race. Some people might say I didn’t have the form I should have, and maybe not, but I would never have known that. I just love racing my bike – so I came here to race.”

In the men’s scratch race, Mark Stewart finished in 12th place.

The Great Britain Cycling Team will be back in action tomorrow, with Jack Carlin and Jason Kenny competing in the sprint, Matt Walls in the omnium, Neah Evans and Elinor Barker will pair up in the Madison and senior academy rider Josie Knight will compete in the individual pursuit.
