Hennessy sprints to Gent-Wevelgem victory for Great Britain Cycling Team

Jacob Hennessy sprinted to victory at Gent-Wevelgem Under-23 Race on Sunday to give the Great Britain Cycling Team a famous win in Belgium.

The Senior Academy rider showed strength and tactical nous as he triumphed from a reduced breakaway of seven at the end of 185km of racing in the opening round of the UCI Under-23 Nations' Cup.

“Yeah, it’s definitely the moment of my career,” Hennessy said, after seeing off the challenge of American Ian Garrison in the sprint.

“It beats any other race I’ve won before. This is only my third season on a bike so I’m quite new to it - last year was my first year properly racing.

“It’s my third race in Belgium and first nations’ cup as well so I had no real expectations. So when we found out the group was going to stay away I think I was more committed than anyone else to get position.”

Ethan Hayter was 36th, Adam Hartley 57th, Joe Holt 68th, Matt Bostock 69th while Angus Claxton did not finish. 

Pfeiffer Georgi wins junior women's race

Great Britain Cycling Team Junior Academy rider Pfeiffer Georgi made it a British double as she topped the podium in the UCI Junior Women's Nations' Cup edition of the race.

Georgi, riding for Liv CC Epic Coaching, won with a solo charge, crossing the line 52 seconds ahead of Amber van der Hulst after 70km of racing.

Pidcock Britain's best in junior men's race

Cyclo-cross junior world champion Tom Pidcock took 11th in the Gent-Wevelgem UCI Junior Nations' Cup race, the best finisher of six from the Great Britain Cycling Team.
