The Great Britain Cycling Team finished just outside of the medals in two events but took an historic second place in the inaugural women's Madison.

No medals were on offer for the event but riders Jenny Holl and Lauren Dolan were happy with their second placing and hoped the event will be and medal race in 12 months time.

Inaugural women’s Madison

The junior women’s Madison was ridden as an exhibition event; with a view to it being included as a medal race by the UCI in future competitions. It was a highly competitive race, won by the first team from Australia.

Lauren Dolan and Jenny Holl made up Great Britain team one and finished in second place, having taken two laps and won 13 points.

The second British team, consisting of Jess Roberts and Rebecca Raybould, finished in fifth place overall.

“It was fun! It was interesting, a bit dodgy but everybody was, including us!” said Holl.

“I think it’s promising for next year, we want to come back as second years and win,” said Dolan.

“We didn’t know the prize was a set of wheels – it’s a very good one – next year!”

Individual pursuit

Ethan Hayter finished fourth in the men’s individual pursuit, after contesting the bronze medal race with Germany’s Bastian Flicke.

The event was a home victory for the Swiss, and a new world record for Stefan Bisseger.

Hayter rode himself to the top of the standings in his heat but, as he was only the 13th rider of 42 to go in qualification, he had a long nervous wait, watching the rest of the field trying to beat his time, finishing with the third fastest time at the end of the competition.

Rhys Britton rode himself into fifth place initially, with a time of 3:19.043 - personal best, and finished in ninth overall.

Men's omnium

Fred Wright set the fastest time in the first event of the second half of the men’s omnium, the 1km time trial.

The ride put the British rider in the silver medal position, only eight points behind reigning champion Campbell Stewart of New Zealand

A fifth place in the flying lap left Wright with 170 points from five events, still in the silver medal position.

Wright dropped to fourth in the overall standings during the course of the final points race, as Tomas Contte of Argentina and J Johansen of Denmark picked up an extra lap on the Briton.

Despite a valiant effort in the last 20 laps, Wright couldn’t get back into the medals and finished in fourth place, with 200 points.

Women’s omnium day one

Eleanor Dickinson finished the first half of her omnium competition with a seventh place finish in the elimination race as she heads into the final three events tomorrow.

The British rider started the day strongly, with a third place finish in the scratch race and a new personal best in the individual pursuit.

Men’s sprint qualifying

Hamish Turnbull and Alex Jolliffe went in the men’s sprint in the morning session, with both progressing to the 1/16 rounds.

Joliffe was up against Martin Cechman, the Czech rider who was crowned European champion in the same event last week, and the Cechman showed his class by outsprinting Jolliffe and progressing to the last 16.

Turnbull was up against the bronze medallist from the European championships, Ayrton De Pauw, but managed to out lunge the Belgian rider to reach the quarter finals.

Men's sprint

In the next round, Turnbull was up against the 1km time trial world champion, Stefan Ritter, who continued his dominant form at the championships and sent Turnbull to the repechages.
