REPORT: DIVISION THREE
BRETFORD V EAST PARK
5th June 2011
Report: Bernie Kemp

Well what a great day at Bretford! The sun was shining, the grass bank and circuit looked in perfect condition. There were a lot of spectators at the Bretford circuit and even two children wanting to have a go at our sport.

Bretford held 2 division 3 matches against East Park. The first match Bretford used 3 Seven Year Olds, Scott Price, Charlie Bracken and Michael Dunn who have never rode in a Team Match before. We were out muscled on our own track by a more experienced East Park. Joe Guy for East Park raced extremely well and enjoyed the Bretford Circuit.

Lewis Beardsmore from East Park gained valuable experience. Ryan Dunn has only been riding for Bretford for 8 weeks showed how good he will be with more racing. Jason Cleaver also showed that he can team ride in a meeting. The first match was won by East Park 103 to 77.

Bretford 77: Niall Cleaver 15, Charlie Bracken 5, Jake Gray 11, Ryan Dunn 10, Jason Cleaver 12, Kyle Roberts 15, Scott Price 3, Michael Dunn 6.

East Park 103: Jamie Whetton 20, Josh Whetton 10, Brandon Whetton 19, Kay Whetton 14, Joe Guy 18, Lewis Beardsmore 7, Will Cartwright 9, Liam Cartwright 6.

The second Match was a much closer affair. Bretford fielded 12 different riders in this meeting. Joe Sears who is only 7 years of age, has only been riding a bike for a year. He raced in his first ever match and is new to the sport. However his family are not; his Grandad rode for Bretford in the 1940's and his Dad had a dabble at the old Brandon cycle Speedway circuit years ago.

Bretford's firepower came from Lee Kemp, beating adult Dave Meaningly on two occasions from the back. He was well supported by team-mates Dan Price, Kyle Roberts and Niall Cleaver. Dan Price, still only 9, showed experience that belied his years, drawing three of his five rides and getting his partner through. Matt Hanbidge was taken around the fence on several occasions by an East Park rider and was getting very frustrated, until in his last heat he jumped out of the gate and won his first Heat ever in a team Race meeting.

By heat 11 the meeting was all square but East Park then used Jamie Whetton as reserve in heat 12. Lee took Jamie wide but unfortunately Jamie's brother Brandon got under with Niall Cleaver not taking full advantage of this manoever from his team mate. Niall Cleaver again has not done much team racing and I am sure will improve in the up and coming meetings. East Park took advantage in Heat 13 and 14, getting 6-4's then the rest of the heats were drawn. However Heat 16 was very eventful with East Park on a 7-3 then Kyle Roberts nudged out Jamie Whetton to get his partner and him through to share the heat. The Score East Park 93 - Bretford 87.

Bretford 87: Lee Kemp 19, Jason Cleaver 7, Matt Hanbidge 12, Dan Price 13, Kyle Roberts 16, Ryan Dunn 7, Joe Sears 3, Niall Cleaver 10.

East Park 93: Dave Meanley 17, Lewis Beardsmore 7, Brandon Whetton 18, Liam Cartwright 3, Kay Whetton 11, Will Cartwright 13, Joe Guy 9, Jamie Whetton 15.

EAST NEWPORT V POOLE
Report: Rob Absalom
5th June 2011

Premier League

East Newport suffered another defeat this time at the hands of Poole but signs are now starting to show that the newcomers are being taken seriously as major players in matches yet to come. Lady luck let the home side down with unforced errors gifting the Poole side vital race wins in match containing typical Premier League action expected at this level. Referee, Colin Simmons, had very little to do from the centre green as both sets of riders race a tough and competitive match in great spirits and credit must go to them for providing the large crowd a great feast of cycle speedway.

Leicester turned up at Wednesfield's Ashmore Park race track today with a power packed team of riders, and what a spectacular show of cycle speedway racing was given by the two teams,

The next heat was drawn 5-5 then in heat 7 Wednesfield took full advantage when Craig Marchant was excluded by match referee Bob Prince for moving whilst under starters orders that left Beharrell & jewkes up against World Champion Luckasz Nowacki Aces CJ done the job on Nowacki closing him down whilst Beharrell took the lead and CJ held off the challenge of the world champ to take a 7-2 advantage to Wednesfield score 37-32, heat 8 was drawn and in the next going into the interval Leicester came bouncing back with a 7-3 win from Wadhams & Stephenson to put themselve just one point behind 45-44.

Second half started with a 5-5 and then in heat 11 the turning point of the match for Leicester came when Mark Griffiths Uncharacteristically broke through the start tapes whilst under orders and got his marching orders back to the pits leaving Leicesters Marchant & Nowacki to take a 7-2 win from lone Aces rider Terry Norman putting them in a 4 points lead 56-52 a lead they held for the next two races with two 5-5s, heat 14 saw the Aces come back with a 6-4 from Griffiths & Radcliffe to narrow leicesters lead to just 2 points, then another two drawn heats and then with just two races remaining leicester sprang a 6-4 in heat 17 to put them 4 points up again going into the last heat,

But Wednesfield were not going to lay down and almost sprang a suprise come back with Phil Howells making the gate from grid two over Terry Norman but Lee Aris had other thoughts and held Marchant from the gate takeing him out wide for a lap before terry Norman let him by for a final last two laps assault on Howells who had gained quite a lead but Aris drew him into his sights and coming upto the final two turns made his move for a pass on the inside only for Howells to dump him and his self onto the center green allowing Terry Norman through to take the lead, everyone waited with baited breath for the refs whistle to blow but nothing happend and the race stood in the order it finished with Norman the winner followed by Marchant, Howells and Aris 5-5 the result but what a fantastic match between these two teams!

REPORT: HETHERSETT HAWKS CLUB REPORT
Report: Mel Perkins

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO gave a good performance in the very competitive British Veterans Club Championship held at Leicester. They finished fourth in their semi-final but were only seven points away from qualifying for the final. Their progress was hampered by injuries - Tim Grimes slipped off in his second ride and had to face his last two rides with a strained groin and then Roger Carter crashed heavily (a fall that saw a Birmingham rider excluded) and ended the match with a badly swollen knee. Dave Chambers got the biggest cheer when he stormed away to win the final heat.

(D.Chambers 11 R.Carter 10 M.Perkins 8 T.Grimes 4)

Meanwhile Tiffany Collins was contesting the Welsh Open Ladies Championship at Newport. She dropped just one point in qualifying races and then negotiated the semi-finals to reach the final. From the unluckiest drawn gate position - the outside - she did well to work her way through to third place behind Sandra Tamborska (Sheffield) and Charlie-Jane Herbert (Horspath).

Tiffany was among nine Hawks who competed in Sunday's South East Grand Prix at Ipswich. Best for the Hawks was Dave Martin who now leads the Senior series after a second place at Ipswich. Phil Adams (Senior) and Oliver Buxton (U16s) both finished third and Tyler Matthews (U8s) came fourth.

This Sunday Hethersett travel to the Midlands to take on holders Leicester in the first round of the British Team Championship while on Wednesday (15th) the Carmichaels Norfolk U16 Championship is being held at Eaton Park.

ASTLEY AND TYLDESLEY CLUB REPORT
Report: Mike Hack

Astley & Tyldesley staged Round 3 of the A & T Go-Ride Grand Prix series at Gin Pit on Sunday afternoon. A handicapping system was used, to cater for the disparity in age and ability of riders competing. The eventual top three riders all met in heat 4 and Adam Phillips overcame his half lap handicap to overhaul Max Evans and Thomas Whitwam. All three riders were unbeaten in their other races, so that was the final outcome. The handicapping system certainly made each rider work hard for his points.

A & T Go-Ride Grand Prix Round 3 result
Adam Phillips 16, Max Evans 15, Thomas Whitwam 14, Alex Green 13, Reece Govin 12, Danny Kirkham 11, Matthew Snell 10.
Referee - Bill Phillips.

Leading positions after 3 rounds - Adam Phillips 68 GP pts, Max Evans 49, Thomas Whitwam 46, Adam Turnbull 38, Stefan Whitelegg 34, Reece Pollitt 25.

Astley & Tyldesley hosted Round 3 of the A & T Go-Ride Racing League at Gin Pit on Thursday evening. Walkden edged out Gin Pit for the win on the night, with Blackmoor 3rd. There was plenty of keen racing, as the handicapping system resulted in no rider racing unbeaten. Thomas Whitwam and Stefan Whitelegg each bagged 14 points for Blackmoor and Walkden respectively, whilst Alex Green was top scorer for Gin Pit, with 11.

Astley & Tyldesley Go-Ride Racing League Round 3 result
Walkden 27 Gin Pit 24 Blackmoor 22.
Walkden: Stefan Whitelegg 14, Adam Phillips 13.
Gin Pit: Alex Green 11, Reece Pollitt 9, Danny Kirkham 4.
Blackmoor: Thomas Whitwam 14, Max Evans 8.
Referee - Bill Phillips.

League positions after 3 rounds - Gin Pit 10, Blackmoor 7.5, Walkden 6.5, Hindsford 6, Lowton 1.

The venue for Round 4 of the A & T Go-Ride Grand Prix series has been switched. Instead of being at Gin Pit, it will be held on a temporary grass track next Sunday, 12th June, at the Three Sisters Racing Circuit, Ashton-in-Makerfield, WN4 8DD, as part of the Wigan Family Cycling Day, organised by Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust. Registrations are at 11.30 am, with the first race at 12 noon.

5th June 2011
Report: Jonathan Sidwick

TOMBORSKI CROWNED WELSH OPEN GIRLS CHAMPION

2011 Welsh Girls & Boys Open Championships took place at the Newport raceway with both events providing plenty of exciting racing.

The girl's event first took centre stage, fifteen riders from across the country from Sheffield, East Park, Hethersett and Hellingly were joined by riders from local teams Newport, Horspath and Poole to contest twenty qualifying heats, the top eight going through to two semi finals then the top two from each progressing to a winner takes all Grand Final.

Main stand out performers from qualifying were Tiffany Collins, Charlie Ellitts, Livvy Horsley, Sandra Tomborski and Charlie-Jane Herbert who all scored fifteen points to make the semis, they were joined in the top eight by reigning world champion Laura Watson, fellow teammate Vicky Brown and surprise package Kayleigh Stiggants.

Qualifying Scores
Charlie Ellitts 15, Livvy Horsley 15, Tiffany Collins 15, Charlie-Jane Herbert 15, Sandra Tomborski 15, Laura Watson 13, Vicky Brown 13, Kayleigh Stiggants 13, Rebecca Davies 11, Kristina Mines 11, Kala Whetton 10, Phoebe Kemp 8, Natalie Ward 8, Sian Bonici 7, Rachel Edge 3.

Semi Final 1 saw Herbert, Horsley, Watson and Brown come to tapes, Herbert got the gate and ran out an easy winner, the main action was taking place for the all important second place, Watson got second after being pushed to the line by Brown with Horsley a close fourth.

Semi Final 2 had the quartet of Collins, Tomborski, Stiggants and Ellitts competing, Collins got the gate and led for two laps before Tomborski made an outside pass down the home straight to get the win. Collins held on for second to qualify for the last four, Stiggants finished third and Ellitts got fourth.

With grid positions for the final drawn the gates rose and it was Tomborski who sprang from gate three to lead out of bend two, Herbert was second with Collins third, Tomborski was unstoppable and raced away for a deserved win to clinch the Welsh open and take the trophy back to Sheffield, Herbert managed to keep Collins at bay for second with Watson finishing fourth.

CARMICHAEL EASES TO WELSH JUNIOR OPEN WIN

Horspath rider Mark Carmichael raced to victory in the Boys Welsh Open, the competition ran over the same format as the Girls races earlier in the day featured twenty riders from all over the UK, Sheffield, Ipswich & East Park were joined by riders from the Southern based teams to complete a very competitive line up.

Ipswich's Ashley Hill was the pick of the qualifiers, picking up four heat wins and looking at ease on the wide open spaces of the Newport track, local star Jack Harrold scored fifteen and was followed by Poole's Aaron Morgan, East Newport's Dan Bock and Carmichael all on fourteen points, they were joined by another Newport rider Leigh Tippins and Lee Clarke of Horspath.

A run off was required for the last qualifying place as four riders finished on ten points, Dan Garner off gate one made the best start and was followed by Jamie Langton with Oli Sidwick in third, Jordan Stant made a mistake on bend four trying to make up ground and ended up losing control of his bike, that left Sidwick chasing Garner, on lap three the leader left a gap on the back straight that let Sidwick in for the win and the all important qualifying place.

Qualifying Scores
Ashley Hill 16, Jack Harrold 15, Mark Carmichael 14, Aaron Morgan 14, Dan Bock 14, Leigh Tippins 12, Lee Clarke 11, Oli Sidwick 10, Dan Garner 10, Jamie Langton 10, Jordan Stant 10, Aiden Owen 9, Zac Payne 9, Shane Bentley 8, Arron Hughes 8, Corey Burnell-Jones 8, Josh Robertson 6, Liam Webster 5, Hayden Chant 4, Jamie Whetton 4.

Semi Final 1 bought together from gate one Clarke, Hill, Morgan and Carmichael. Clarke made the gate and never looked back securing the win, Carmichael managed second after a two lap battle with Morgan with Hill finishing a distant fourth.

Semi Final 2 saw four local based riders come to tapes, Bock, Harrold, Tippins and Sidwick. Bock was quickest out the gate followed by Harrold and Tippins, as Tippins attempted an inside pass his progress was halted by the defending Harrold both riders tangled, Sidwick saw his chance and raced away to clinch second .

The Grand Final had Bock on grid one, followed by Sidwick, Carmichael and Clarke. A lightning start from gate three saw the Horspath man take control and he raced to a fine victory. Bock finished second ahead of Sidwick and Clarke who were always in the mix.

Congratulations to all riders who featured in some great racing in both events, especially to Sandra Tomborski who looked very impressive in taking the Girls title and to Mark Carmichael on regaining his title he won twelve months previously.

REPORT: HORSPATH V SANDWELL
5th June 2011
Report: Geoff Gamage

An entertaining fixture saw Horspath Hammers maintain their 100% record against a very lively Sandwell Lions. The league leaders were without Steve Harris (on Polish League duty) and British Champion Mark Boaler who is on a family holiday and also had their resident Polish rider Mateusz Szymczak racing with a hand injury. As with all the matches at The Village this season Hammers had to come from behind although this time it was only after the opening race 6-4 via Lions Jamie Ball / Lewis Bates.

Horspath levelled through a Chris Timms / Mark Carmichael 6-4 next heat and then took the lead with Lewis / Chris Osborne notching another 6-4. Paul Heard took the flag in a drawn 4th, Matty Szymczak / Shaun Rudman got another 6-4, Lewis Osborne won a drawn 6th, Sandwell hit back with a 7th heat Lee Smith / Scott Milward 6-4. A big 7-3 from Carmichael / Timms opened a 6 point gap, quickly reduced in half with a 6-3 from Leighton Bates / Errol Thaw following a Szymczak gate exclusion. Hammers 46 Lions 43 at half time.

Horspath got off to a flyer in the 10th with a 7-3 from Chris Osborne / Matty Szymczak. Carmichael won a drawn 11th heat then Horspath got a 5-4 in the 12th after a Errol Thaw exclusion and Matt Smith win. Lewis Bates outpaced the Osborne boys in a drawn 13th. Sandwell grabbed a 5-4 following a Timms exclusion and Szymczak win with Lee Smith taking a drawn 15th. A Lewis Osborne / Shaun Rudman 6-4 virtually sealed the points, followed by two drawn heats and wins for Lee Smith and Mark Carmichael which ended a very enjoyable match.

referee Robin Spicer (Dorset)

The Combination match saw Horspath call on two of their veterans Mark Janes and Martin Glover plus an inclusion for British Under 10 Champion George Horsley to maintain their full bonus point record. Sandwell gave away 6 points via Ricki Johnson and must have been pleased with the form of David Ball in the 75-59 defeat.

Led by Lee Clarke, the Hammers all scored very solidly, all scoring double figures except Horsley who got 9, whilst Sandwell relied heavily on Ball and Johnson, they also got off to the worst possible start as Steve Brookes dropped a chain on the first bend. The 7-3 from Horsley / Lee Clarke in the 7th bringing the biggest cheer of the day.
