STOCKPORT 2006 V HULL
Northern League
29th May 2011
Report: Andy Schofield

Hull travelled to Stockport for a Northern League fixture minus three first team regulars and found it hard work against a full strength home side. The heavens opened just before the first race and Corey Graham made a good start only to be reeled in by Jack Lush. Corey and Graham Storey made Stockport fight for all their points but for little return all afternoon. The visitors real threat came from Adam Stephenson and Matt Beharrell who prevented any unbeaten scores in the home side and won five races between them, with Adam also picking up a tape exclusion.

However, Hull were unable to gain a heat advantage and Stockport soon raced away to a commanding victory. Dylan Radcliffe only dropped one point while Terry Norman and Ben Higham also stood out in a good team display. The match was raced in very sporting manner, despite the continued showers, and well refereed by Graham Lush.

Stockport 86: Dylan Radcliffe 18+1, Terry Norman 17+1, Ben Higham 16+1, Jack Lush 12+1, Matt Lush 10+2, Jake Read 8+2, Ali Lam 5+1

Hull 60: Matt Beharrell 16+1, Adam Stephenson 15, Graham Storey 11, Corey Graham 6, David Cooper 6, James Hunt 4, Andy Cooper 1, Declan Rokahr 1.

Hull were shorthanded for the combination match and fell to a heavy defeat against the current champions. Graham Storey won four races for Hull with good support from David Cooper while Jake Read was unbeaten in a strong Stockport side.

Stockport 92: Jake Read 17+3, James Carter 19, Matt Turner 17+1, Joe Pickford 16+2, Derek Garnett 13+3, Georgina Healey 10+3.

Hull 46: Graham Storey 18, David Cooper 13, Declan Rokahr 8, Andy Cooper 7+1.

The Hull Club have recieved funding under the Sportivate programme to provide 7 coaching sessions for 14 to 25 year olds. They will have two 'taster' sessions on grass at local secondary schools followed by five sessions at the Hessle Raceway. Sportivate will give participants the chance to receive coaching in a sport of their choice. The programme is being delivered through the network of 49 County Sport Partnerships via Sport England.

THE ADE GALE 'LAURELS'
Harbourside Park Poole
29th May 2011
Report: Graham Sutton

Senior Laurels

With a line-up on a par with the British final itself the 2011 Laurels did not disappoint the Whitsun Bank Holiday crowd at Harbourside Park. Lee Aris battled his way through a star studded line-up to clinch the coveted trophy and the top spot on the rostrum ahead of home favourites Thomas Reed and Greg Gluchowski. After opening up with a win, Lee picked up three second places behind Reed, Mark Boaler and Lukas Nowacki to take his total to 13 with a race to go, importantly from the inside grid. Gluchowski meanwhile had won three of his four races and was ahead of the pack on 14 but with a gate 4 against Aris in the title deciding 18th race.

Just behind these two front runners on 12 points were Andy Angel, Tom Colling, Thomas Reed and Chris Timms, any one of them capable of stepping forward to take the trophy. Reed stated his case with a third race win in heat 17 to put the pressure on Aris by finishing on 16 points. So it was down to heat 18 and Aris withstood the pressure admirably by powering away for a title winning race victory while his main challenger Gluchowski got stuck at the back behind Chris Jewkes and only advanced his total to 15, the same as Andy Angel who finished 2nd in that race behind Aris.

Tom Colling was the next rider in the spotlight in heat 19 where a win would bring him level with his Premier League team mate Reed on 16. Lee Smith had other ideas however as he sped away from gate 1 for a second successive race win. The Southampton based rider duly joined Gluchowski and Angel on 15 as eyes turned to the remaining member of the chasing pack, Chris Timms. The Birmingham star needed to win the final race to ensure a rostrum place but this time it was Craig Marchant who put the fly in the ointment by streaking ahead to leave four riders chasing the one remaining rostrum place behind Aris and Reed.

The draw for gates put Colling off the inside with Gluchowski alongside on two, Angel on three and Timms on four. Poole's new Polish favourite had consistently been the fastest starter of the event and again he sped to the front while Colling fell in the mayhem behind him allowing Angel and Timms through but Gluchy was away. If there had been a prize for most entertaining rider then surely Andy Angel was the obvious canditate and so he proved again as he reeled in the Polish star on the final lap, failing by less than a tyres width at the end of yet another 4 lap classic.

All 16 riders deserved nothing but praise for dishing up such action packed drama in front of an appreciative crowd which included a sizeable number of former riders. Hats off too for Dave Hunting who delivered another refereeing masterclass to once underline his suitability for major events. Former Bournemouth rider Steve Read once again provided the sponsorship on behalf of Read Fabrications and was on hand to make the presentations.

Scores - Lee Aris 17 Thomas Reed 16 Greg Gluchowski 15 Andy Angel 15 Chris Timms 15 Tom Colling 15 Lee Smith 13 Paul Heard 13 Craig Marchant 13 Lukas Nowacki 12 Chris Jewkes 11 Jack Harrold 10 Mark Boaler 10, Matty Szymczak 8, Luke Armes 7 Phil Howells 7

Junior Laurels

Ben Mould was in a class apart from the other 15 competitors as he stormed his way to the top of the Junior Laurels rostrum with a 20 point maximum. The former British junior champion put in five faultless races which saw him hit the front by the first bend of each one whilst his nearest rival Arron Morgan - beaten only by Mould in heat 6 - got to runners-up spot with a series of skillful overtakes.

Leyton Glover joined Poole clubmate Morgan on the rostrum with a typical gritty performance ahead of other fancied contenders Mark Carmichael and Matt Smith. A word of praise for 13 point Shane Bentley, the newly crowned South Australian junior champion who showed what a great prospect he is at just 14 years of age. This was a first class meeting with some excellent racing which surely underlines the quality of emerging British cycle speedway talent.

Scores - Ben Mould 20 Arron Morgan 19 Leyton Glover 16 Matt Smith 14 Mark Carmichael 14 Shane Bentley 13 Ollie Sidwick 12 Dan Chambers 12 Joe Kemp 12 Will Bristowe 11 Ricky Johnstone 11 Ben Collins 11 Craig Nethercott 10 Hayden Chant 10 Josh Robertson 7 Alex Matthews 6.

Girls Laurels

The decision to stage a Girls Laurels was a big hit with the crowd as it showcased the rapidly improving skills of the young riders in action. Talented Horspath rider Livvy Horsley topped scored from her 4 races but drew gate 4 in the A final whereas Exeter's pride and joy Lauren Hookway sped from grid 1 to clinch the trophy. Girls racing was the big winner here and a decision to expand to a full 16 rider format for 2012 is now under consideration.

Qualifying scores - Livvy Horsley 14 Laura Watson 12 Tiffany Collins 12 Lauren Hookway 10 Rebecca Davies 10 Krissie Mines 9 Kayleigh Stiggants 8 Holly Morgan 5
A Final 1st Lauren Hookway 2nd Tiffany Collins 3rd Livvy Horsley 4th Laura Watson
B Final 1st Krissie Mines 2nd Rebecca Davies 3rd Kayleigh Stiggants 4th Holly Morgan

REPORT: GREAT BLAKENHAM V NORWICH
30th May 2011
Report: Glenn Grange

Great Blakenham 87, Norwich 91

It was billed as one of the matches of the South-East League's season, when Norwich 'Stars' travelled to Great Blakenham to take on the Suffolk village side in Division 1, and the 'billing' lived up to its hype as both sides turned in a brilliant match, where some controversial refereeing decisions went to decide the destination of the League points, writes Glenn Grange.

For a match that has produced some flare-ups over the years, it was Great Blakenham who started the better, scoring a 7 - 3 maximum heat win in the opening heat. It didn't get any better for Norwich as the home side scored a heat advantage in Heats 5 & 7, to hold a healthy lead by 39 - 30. Norwich managed to record a maximum heat win in Heat 9 to go into the interval trailing by 47 - 42.

The first four heats of the second half were shared scoring heats, and it wasn't until Heat 14 that The Stars were able to close the deficit to just one point, when Lukas Pisczczek and Ian Grange scored a vital 7 - 3 heat win (70 - 69). With the match finely balanced and going into the final four heats, Norwich received some luck when Blakenham's Jason Ashford was excluded for 'legging' Lee Grange half-way round the Pits turn. This decision infuriated the home side, but the Referee made his call, and as far as the Norwich team were concerned it was the right one.

With only one home rider in the re-run, Norwich raced to a 7 - 2 heat win to take the lead (77 - 81) to go into the lead for the first time. With the final heat coming up, Norwich made a tactical change, bringing in Reserve Ian Grange, and when Ian and Lukas Piszczczek blocked every effort to stop Blakenham's England International Adam Peck from joining his partner 'up front' the destination of the League points went to Norwich with a final match score of Great Blakenham 87, Norwich 'Stars' 91. For Great Blakenham, Lewis Osborne 20 pts, Chris Osborne 17+2 and Adam Peck 17 topped the home scoring whilst for Norwich Lee Grange 17, Lukas Piszczek 15+1 and Ian Grange 14+3 led the scoring.

Combination: Norwich 64 - Great Blakenham 102

In the Division 2 match that followed, a very young Norwich side saw off a spirited Great Blakenham side by 64 - 102. Oliver Riley 20+1, Rob Warminger 19 and Dannielle Riley 16+3 topped the Norwich 'B' scoring, but they all had to work hard for the victory.

On Wednesday evening at Hethersett, 14 riders contested the 2011 Norfolk Under 19 Riders Championship, with Daniel Chambers of Norwich, and formerly of Hethersett, coming out on top with a 20 point maximum. Second place went to his club-mate Josh Colby who scored 19 points and third place went to home rider Scott Grimes who went on to defeat the 2010 Norfolk Under 19 Champion Phil Adams in a run-off after both riders had finished with 17 points.

On Saturday at Leicester, both Hethersett and Norwich will be contesting the British Over 40 Club Championship. The meeting starts at noon.

NORFOLK UNDER 19 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Report: Mel Perkins

HETHERSETT HAWKS / SWINTON & CO staged the Norfolk U19 Championship at the Memorial Playing Field and the event was won by former Hethersett rider Dan Chambers. The best home riders were Philip Adams, who failed to capitalise on a favourable draw, and speedy 15-year-old Scott Grimes. Both tied on 17 points, three behind the winner and two behind runner-up Josh Colby. Scott drew the inside starting position for the race-off for third place on the podium and held off the challenge of Phil to take the chequered flag. Ben Collins fell in his last race while chasing Dan and lost his chance of a trophy while Oliver Buxton also impressed.

Ben travelled to Poole to race in the Junior Laurels, a major invitation event, where he scored 10 points. Tiffany Collins had an excellent day finishing second in the Girls Laurels event.

This Saturday the Hawks' Veterans team are in Leicester for the British Club Championship and on Sunday several Hethersett riders will be at Ipswich for a South-East Grand Prix while Tiffany Collins is in Newport for the Welsh Girls Open event.
