Report: 01/05/2011 - Northern Fours Round 2
Report: Andy Schofield

The second round of the Northern Four's League proved to be a closely fought meeting on another sunny but cool day at the Hessle Raceway. Hull and Bury began well, with two wins each, but Stockport crucially had a tape exclusion which left them playing 'catch up' throughout the afternoon. By the halfway stage Hull held a slender one point lead over Bury with Stockport closing in two points back and Heckmondwike never far away in fourth.
Bury took advantage of their inside gates to take the lead after 11 races from Hull and Stockport, but heat 12 was to prove crucial as Adam Stephenson evened up the score with a win for Hull after Stockport's Jake Read moved on the start. Hull duly obliged from their gate ones and Bury held onto second place from Stockport and an ever enthusiastic Heckmondwike side.

Adam Stephenson showed his Premier League credentials with an unstoppable display for Hull with team mate Ian Swanborough again on top form. Chris Parish and Neil Howarth led the way for Bury with Jake Read and Jack Lush looking sharp for Stockport. Evergreen Darren Kent rode well for the Saints and received good support from youngster Pawel Idziorek.

Report: Poole v Sandwell - 01/05/11
Report: Graham Sutton

Above: Poole vs Sandwell (image John Burge)

When all five secondary licensed Stoke riders advised Pete Dalley l that they were not prepared to travel to the South Coast, Sandwell knew that their May Day match with Poole would be tough and fielding only six riders, this proved to be the case. Home riders and supporters were deprived of the match they thought they would have as six of the eighteen races featured just one opposition rider.

Thanks to some swift overtaking by Thomas Reed and Tom Colling, Poole made a clean sweep of the race winners up to the interval before Smith bros Lee and Matt gave the West Midlanders something to cheer them up with wins in heats 10, 14 and 15. In fact full marks to all the young Sandwell six who did ride, for their never say die approach in marked contrast to the names missing from the teamsheet which were present at the seemingly more attractive away match at Ipswich 3 weeks ago.

Inevitably the home club were left drawing comparisons with their corresponding matches with Birmingham at Harbourside over the last couple of seasons which were close and highly entertaining. Sadly those features were missing today.

Report: British Youth and Junior League Round 2 - East Newport
30th April 2011, East Newport | Report: Graham Sutton

Reigning BYJL champions Poole followed up their double victory in the first round of the 2011 championships by taking top spot in both sections of the newly divided competition at East Newport.

They provided at least one A finalist in every age group including the U.16 where Arron Morgan swept the board. Biggest cheer of the day however came in the preceding U14's when Jesse Moore became the first ever Hellingly rider to win an A final in the BYJL. It was a moment when everyone present stopped whatever they were doing and warmly applauded the bright young prospect. Marvellous!

Report: Premier League - East Newport v Horspath
Report by: Rob Absalom | Images: Gilbert Davis

Premier League newcomers East Newport put up a brave fight against the current League champions, Horspath, on a warm and windy Sunday afternoon in Wales. Many predicted a whitewash score in favour in the visitors but home advantage on a superbly prepared racing surface saw the home side keep the visitors in check for most of the match. Eight races were drawn, one race in favour of the home side and the rest in favour of Horspath meant that the score was kept close to the magical 100. For the home side Neil Power could only manage 2 rides before withdrawing through illness and the Eastenders sorely missed Craig Nethercott who had to honour work commitments. With a full side the match could've become much closer but nevertheless the crowd witnessed a great feast of cycle speedway with a final score of 74 - 102 in favour of the visitors.

East Newport 74: Ben Mould 19, Rob Absalom 5, Aaron Hughes 7,  Nicky Evans 13, Neil Power 5, Aaron Herbert 8+1, Chris Davies 4, Dan Bock 13

Horspath 102: Chris Osborne 13+4, Paul Heard 14, Chris Timms 9+, Lewis Osborne 14, Mark Boaler 11+3, Mark Szymzac 13, Steve Harris 15, Mark Carmichael 13+4

In the corresponding combination match, the scores were once again kept close for much of the match until Horspath banged in three 7 - 3 heat wins to take the match comfortably. The East Newport side all had impressive races and even though this was their third Premier League match they've learned quite a lot about the level of fitness and speed that is required to exist at this level.

East Newport: Matt Davis 10+2, Colin Wildy 8, Corey B Jones 14, Ethan Greenslade 5, Simon Bendon 6, Josh Davis 8, Tudor Coombes 2

Horspath: Mike Burgess 13+2, Zac Payne 11, Matt Coulter 17, Jack Smith 8+3, Wayne Clarke 11, Lee Clarke 13

Report - 01/05/11 - Ipswich v Leicester
Report by: Sharon Stant

Leicester given a tough test at Ipswich

On a bright and windy day in Suffolk, Ipswich played host to the current British Team Champions and front runners for the Premier league title this season. Leicester Monarchs arrived with a squad boasting four former British Champions. If the Leicestershire outfit thought they were for an easy ride, they were soon to know that the young Suffolk outfit weren't going to lay down and make life easy.

Heat one saw Leicester claim inside grids with Ashford/Yelland partnership going on to take the first heat 6-4. Heat two saw a shared heat, with Williamson holding the attentions of Howells to allow team mate Colby to follow Jarvis home . Heat three saw an exclusion to Ipswich's Mower for turning right on Newey. The re-run saw Newey/Wadhams see-off young Chittock for a 7-2. Heat four saw Leicester extend their lead to 11 points with a 7-3 heat win and, at this early stage, the writing could have easily been on the wall. However, heat five saw Marchant excluded for bringing down an Ipswich rider but Ashford held off a strong challenge from Brooke/Solomon resulting in a 5-4 heat advantage to Ipswich .

Heats six and seven were shared heats, then in heat eight Ashford was excluded for moving under orders; the Ipswich pairing of Williamson / Colby securing a 6-3 heat win to bring Ipswich within seven points. Heat nine saw the young Ipswich pairing of Barker/Chittock on the outside grids up against Howells/ Burns, the Ipswich pair secured a brilliant 5-5 to bring Ipswich within seven points of Leicester at the interval . The team talk at half time was to keep feet firmly planted to the floor, because no one was expecting us to be so close at the break . Heats ten and eleven saw 5-5s, then in heat twelve a surperb pass by Stant on Jarvis going into the third bend set up a 6-4 win with teammate Brooke to close within five points. Surely the unthinkable wasn't going to happen? Heat thirteen saw another 5-5, into heat fourteen which saw Leicester edge away after a fall by Barker who was unlucky not to be able to finish with his front wheel jammed between his front forks, resuling in  a 6-3 advantage taking the score to 72-64 in Leicester's favour. Not to miss the opportunity saw Leicester pairing of Newey/Burns secured a 7-3 in heat fifteen taking them into a twelve point lead with three heats to go. A shared heat in sixteen left Ipswich with a mountain to climb - a miracle was in the asking .

No one could have predicted what the final two heats were to throw up in the way of drama with the four riders at the tapes a exclusion from gate one for Burns, then in the re-run Howells in grid three was also adjudged to have moved under orders, leaving Ipswich collecting an unexpected 7-0 heat win this moved Ipswich within five points of Leicester with just one heat remaining.

With the Suffolk side off the inside grids and with nerves setting in, Ashford for the second time in the match was excluded for moving under orders and suddenly Ipswich had a chance of an unlikely draw. This left Wadhams to face Mower/Colby, with orders ringing in his ears from Leicester team manager, to just make sure he split the home pairing knowing that this was a enough to secure the win, Mower held his gate from one but try as he might Colby, couldn't find a way past Wadhams and so it was the Leicestershire side who in the end held on to win by two points the final score 87-85.

A mention to the referee Colin Simmonds who refereed well under difficult conditions. Ipswich can take a lot of heart from a surperb all round team performance as they go to Wednesfield next Sunday.

Report and Results - South West League
Report: Graham Sutton

2011 is shaping up to provide even closer results than last season judging by the May Day match results which provided last heat deciders at all three venues. Biggest surprise was at Lower Dicker where previously struggling Southampton sprang a surprise not only by snatching the points but by including Gavin Wheeler in their team after his recent return to the UK from New Zealand.

Poole arrived in Devon minus several of their top end league squad but their young guns stepped up to the mark with Matt Mildon and Aaron Smith - combined age just 28 sealing the victory with a 6-4 in the final heat. Daniel Sinclair continues to shine for Swindon and his 18 from 6 races helped the Wiltshire club to share the league points with the previously unbeaten Horspath.
