Report: International Challenge - Celtic Cup
Words: Glenn Grange
International Cycle Speedway made a welcome return to Harford Park after a gap of several years with this Celtic Cup fixture between Ireland and Scotland, but first up on a wet and breezy Harford Park was the Irish Select against Young Wales writes Glenn Grange.
Featuring many local riders in the Irish Select side, this International Challenge opened with a shared scoring heat before the Young Wales duo of Jack Harrold and Dan Bock scored the first 7 - 3 of the match in Heat 3 (13 - 17).
Heat 6 not only saw the race of this match but the race of the day when Irish Select's Danni Riley moved Josh Davies going into the first turn, creating a massive opening for Steve Copping to move into, and for the next three and a half laps covered Danni Steve as Josh Davies tried all he knew to pass Danni, but had to give in eventually, and when the Irish Select crossed the finishing line, it created the loudest cheer of the day (26 - 34).
This though only seemed to be a wake up call for the Young Welsh side who finished the first half well in control to lead at the interval by 36 - 54.
With showers continually falling and making the track difficult, and unpleasant to race in, the Young Welsh side gradually pulled away with four second half maximum heat wins in the first six heats before the Irish Select scored their only heat win of the match in Heat 17 through the impressive Phillip Adams and Oliver Riley (68 - 102). Young Wales brought in Reserve Jacob Soper for Jack Harrold in Heat 18 and still scored a 6 - 4 heat win to make a final match score of the Irish Select 72, Young Wales 108.
Result:
IRISH SELECT 72
Phillip Adams 16+1, Patrick Kruger 11, Scott Grimes 11, Oliver Riley 9+1,
Steve Copping 6, Danni Riley 9+1, Scott McDowell 5, Isaac Bocz 5.
YOUNG WALES 108
Ryan Evans 14+1, Lee Tippins 17+2, Josh Davies 9+1, Lewis Harvey 20,
Jack Harrold 15+1, Dan Bock 14+1, Mark Carmichael 11+1, Jacob Soper 8+1.
This Celtic Cup International opened up with a shock in Heat 1 when the Irish duo of Marcus Sczczlyk and Leigh Cossey raced to a maximum heat win, before the Welsh pair of Mark Winwood and Ben Mould brought the scores level with a maximum heat win of their own (10 - 10).
With rain continually falling throughout the first half, the Harford Park track held up very well, producing some excellent racing as both Ireland and Wales went at it, and would not give way. A race exclusion to Ireland's Ben Donohue in Heat 6 sent Wales into the lead and the visitors kept that one point lead at the half way stage, with a score of Ireland 44, Wales 45.
Two further Irish race exclusions in Heats 11 & 12 saw Wales take advantage of these Irish slip-ups and opened a small lead (56 - 61). Ireland rallied in Heat 13, but in the next race, Wales Roger Cox was lucky to stay in the race as he sent Irelands Craig Norton into and over the safety fence, creating a 6 - 3 heat win to the Welsh (65 - 71).
Going into the final four heats, it was still all to play for, but Wales seemed to want it that little bit more, scoring two 6 - 4 heat winsd and a 7 - 3 to make a score going into the final heat of Ireland 76, Wales 90. A belated maximum heat win to Ireland from Adam Stephenson and Davis Martin in Heat 18 brought about a much more respectable score, making it Ireland 83, Wales 92.
The second leg of this bi-annual Celtic Cup competition will be held in Wales next season, but Ireland are the visitors to Edinburgh next Sunday when they meet Scotland in the Celtic Cup competition.
Result:
IRELAND 83
Leigh Cossey 8+2, Marcus Sczczlyk 16, David Martin 10+1, Jason Barker 12,
Ben Donohue 8, Adam Stephenson 16+2, Craig Norton 11, Barry Copping 2.
WALES 92
Neil Power 10, Chris Davies 9+1, Ben Mould 13+2, Mark Winwood 18,
Nicky Evans 11, Mark Carmichael 17+1, Dave Murphy 8, Roger Cox 6.

Report: Leicester V East Park
Midland League, October 24 2010
Both sides were a little down on firepower but the Monarchs had the resources to cover absences, exemplified by thirteen year old Charlie Cooper who won his three outings from the reserve berth.
Luke Draisey rode well for the Wolves and notched three wins in his seventeen point haul. Lee Aris dropped his only points to the home sides top men, Lukas Nowacki and Carl Jarvis after the interval, having previously taken their scalps in the first half of the meeting, the only points the Leicester duo dropped.
There was some interesting racing, particularly from Kemp, Hartshorn and Doughty, generally when battling against Luke Draisey, Steve Guy and Danny Garner, who all put in lots of effort, if not always reflected in their points tally. As it was no Monarchs riders finished in last place and amassed seventeen bonus points whilst only Aris and Draisey defeated a home man.
Result:
Leicester 111 (C Jarvis 17+2, L Nowacki 17+2, A Doughty 15+2, M Hartshorn 14+4, N Whitehead 13+2, J Kemp 12+1, C Cooper 12, M Skinner 11+2)
