Cycle Speedway Weekly Roundup

Reports and results week ending September 5 2010

Report: Cycle speedway Norwich V Horspath

Words: Glenn Grange

It was a glorious day at Eaton Park, and with the track in near enough perfect condition, the Norwich / Norfolk Premier Coachworks ‘Stars' were looking forward to see if, or how close, they could get to their visitors the title chasing Horspath 'Hammers' writes Glenn Grange.
The match started fairly as expected with visiting rider Steve Harris riding around home rider Lee Grange on the exit of the second bend on the second lap to take the race win. There was a shared scoring heat in Heat 2, and when Norwich's Richard Hunt fell on the exit of the second bend on the first lap and was excluded, it was going to be one of those days again for the luckless 'Stars'. The young Norwich tried hard, but it was just not going their way, and with the home side recording their first race win in Heat 8, it was there for all to see.

Trailing by 35 - 59 at the interval, Horspath kept their foot on the pedal and hit Norwich for 7 - 3 maximum heat wins at will. Dan Chambers scored a belated Norwich race win in Heat 10, and Ian Grange likewise in the final heat. With five of the Norwich side being teenagers, it was no surprise that Horspath powered away from the home side, finally going on to record a healthy win. For Norwich, it was a case of licking their wounds and getting over yet another defeat, the tenth one in the Premier League this season.

There was some consolation though for the home side when Ian Grange challenged Mark Boaler for the British Match Race Championship, and after calling correctly and taking the inside gate position, Ian managed to keep the new British Senior Champion at bay for the whole four laps to become the new British Match Race Champion.

NORWICH / NORFOLK PREMIER COACHWORKS 'STARS' 70
Lee Grange 11, George Solomon 9+1, Ian Grange 14, Ben Collins 11+1,
Richard Hunt 7, Dan Chambers 10, Phil Adams 5, Joshua Colby 3.

Mark Carmichael 16+1, Steve Harris 13+2, Chris Osborne 6, Lewis Osborne 15+1,
Mark Boaler 13+3, Matt Sczymczak 18, Dave Carmichael 14+3, Shaun Rudman 15.

In the Combination match, second place Horspath were looking to keep the pressure on the League leaders Birmingham by taking the league points against third place Norwich. Again like the first team match, Horspath were always in control, but Norwich did manage to record a 6 - 4 heat win in Heat 9 through Jason Barker and Oliver Riley. Jason went on to record two other race wins and Gary Colby had another good meeting as he continues to make improvements from his nasty track crash last season. Danni Riley was awarded the 'Rider of the match' trophy for a spirited performance against such tough opposition.

NORWICH / NORFOLK PREMIER COACHWORKS ‘STARS‘ ‘B' 53

Report: Cycle speedway British Premier League
Leicester V Sheffield

Words: Tim Jarvis

This was a great advert for the Premier League, superb racing, various incidents and a last heat decider to round it all off!

The visitors got off to the best start possible with a 7-3 from Birks and Hoyamd over Peck and Ashford and it wasn't until heat four that the Monarchs edged into the lead thanks to a maximum from Ashford and comeback man Yelland.

The teams entered the interval all square and Leicester, in truth, were looking second best. The Stars piled on the pressure after the interval with a win from reserve Matt Smith over an ever pressing Burns, with Brown keeping Yelland at the back. Heat eleven was decisive though, Nowacki and Jarvis managing to relegate the very fast Angell into third place and taking an impressive maximum, edging Leicester into a two point lead.

Nowacki and lively reserve Burns further extended the lead in heat fifteen with another maximum but the teams still entered the final heat with a draw a possibility, but Nowacki and Burns took the safe option and picked up the minor places to share the heat.

Lee Smith was lightening quick away from the tapes for Sheffield whilst Birks was his normal all action self, and Angell looked far better than his points tally may suggest. Sheffield can count themselves unlucky though, Ben Dickenson arriving too late to take his place, Leicester could well have struggled with him in the opponents side of the pits.

Nowacki, as always, rode superbly as did Newey. There was good back up from several of their team mates who were picking up the minor places, but Leicester missed the injured Pike and could only manage to get a man over the line first on eight occasions. No lack of effort but missing a third heat leader was obviously a telling factor today.

Result:

Leicester 91 (M Newey 17+1, L Nowacki 16+2, C Jarvis 12+2, J Ashford 12+1, K Burns 11+1, A Peck 10, C Marchant 7, L Yelland 6)

Sheffield 87 (J Birks 18+1, L Smith 17+1, M Smith 13, A Angell 12, R Hoyland 11, J Brown 7, J Langton 5, A Owen 2)

Combination
Leicester 72+3 = 75 (M Skinner 16, N Venson 12+2, M Whitehead 11+1, L Whitehead 11, A Doughty 9+1, M Hartshorn 7+1, A Crouch 6)

Sheffield 54 (B Dickenson 13, A Owen 12, S Tomborska 10, V Brown 5+1, R Hudson 4, L Watson 4, J Gabbitas 4, A Watson 1)

And just to round things off the two clubs arranged a series of scratch races for the extra riders around on the day, honours turning out just about even.

Unbeaten Wadhams the new Champion

Report: John Heard

Marcus Wadhams raced to victory in the 2010 Birmingham Monarchs Cycle Speedway Championship on Sunday in front of a large crowd in Perry Hall Park.

On a beautifully prepared track the racing was certainly fast and furious and on more than one occasion referee Al Bentley had to re-start races as riders came together with no-one prepared to give any quarter in the quest to be the Clubs Individual Champion.

The first three races went pretty much to form with wins for Ben Mould over defending champion Andy James in heat 1, Paul Heard, fresh from his top 5 finish in the Senior British Individual event last weekend beating Mark Winwood in heat 2 and Nathan Groves winning heat 3. Heat 4 was the first big clash with pre-meeting favourites Chris Timms and Wadhams meeting, and it was the fast starting Wadhams who raced away and despite the best efforts of Chris took the 4 points.

However in the next race Timms held off a fierce challenge from Heard to put his name back in contention and take points off another pre meeting favourite. The races up to the interval went pretty much with form and as well as further wins for Wadhams and Heard there were also a couple for victories each for veteran Paul Timms and Mark Winwood - the last race before the interval really signalling the end of Chris Timms challenge as he bit the dust under a robust challenge form the other Winwood brother Carl.

Interval leaders - Wadhams 12, Heard & Mark Winwood 11, Paul Timms 10.

Heat 13 saw Wadhams and Mark Winwood clash with Winnie having the benefit of the inside grid, however once again a lightening start by Wadhams saw him a bike length clear by the first turn and another 4 points - Mark finishing 2nd to move himself onto 14. Chris Timms then beat the impressive Ben Mould and a shock looked on the cards in heat 15 as Pete Bourgeois made a flying start to meet Paul Heard on the first bend and take him out very wide - for 3 laps Heard gave chase but it was only as Bourgeois slipped coming out of turn 4 that Heard was able to make the pass. With one round of races to go Wadhams led on 16 from Heard on 15 and Mark Winwood on 14 - with Heard & Wadhams due to meet in the final race of the afternoon, heat 20.

Ben Mould won his final race to finish on 16 points beating Mark Winwood in the process meaning he finished on 17. Chris Timms also won his last ride to finish on 16 meaning the title would be decided in the last race with Wadhams having the benefit of grid 3 to Heards 4, Paul needing to beat him to earn himself a run off.

Once again Marcus flew from the tapes but he could not shake off Paul and going into the last lap it did look like Paul had pulled a fine dive on him, however Marcus spotted the trouble and closed the door meaning 5 unbeaten rides and the title - Paul Heard finishing 2nd on 18 and Mark Winwood 3rd on 17.

Overall a very enjoyable afternoons racing and how good it was to see this event back in the Cycle Speedway Calendar after a gap of several years - great thanks to Al Bentley for refereeing in a manner so appropriate for the afternoon, Mollie James for being our VIP and handing out the prizes and also Sarah Heard for helping put together the programme which without exception everyone agreed was the best cycle speedway programme of the year so far.

Other scorers: Andy James 12, Ben Mould 16, Pete Bourgeois 11, Carl Winwood 14, Bob Prince 12, Phil Widdas 9, Adam lamb 9, Natalie Timms 7, Nathan Groves 14, Chris Timms 16, Reece Winwood 6, Paul Timms 14.
