British Club Championships

Six contending heavyweights were whittled down to four in the Open semi's as Horspath and Sheffield narrowly missed the cut leaving Leicester, Wednesfield, defending champions Birmingham and hosts Poole to contest the final at Harbourside Park.

After a nailbiting finish in the Womens final there was every expectation that the seniors would provide an equally dramatic finale to the 2010 Club Championships and early exchanges seemed to bear this out as Leicester sought to capitalise on their inside grids. All went well in the two opening heats as Dan Pike and Craig Marchant delivered the wins but Lee Aris got the better of Adam Peck in heat 3 with Ben Mould taking an impressive second place.

Wednesfield rode their luck in heat 4 after Thomas Reed fell whilst comfortably ahead of a re-run heat following an exclusion to Nathan Groves, allowing Mark Griffiths to pick up a four point bonus ahead of Jason Ashford. This levelled the scores at 13 apiece for Leicester and Wednesfield with Birmingham on eight and Poole failing to pick up points from gates 4's with a meagre 5 points.

Birmingham were expected to strike back in the next four heats from their insides but they surprisingly trailed in last in heats 5 and 6 as Gavin Wheeler and Thomas Reed gave Poole fresh hopes with impressive wins. Nathan Groves won a re-run heat 7 after Craig Marchant and Pete Young crashed at the first attempt with referee Colin Simmons ruling the Poole captain out of the re-start. Ben Mould scorched away in heat 8 and the interval scoreline stood at Wednesfield 24 Leicester 22, Birmingham 18 and Poole 14.

Marcus Wadhams proved an effective reserve replacement winning heat 9 from gate 2 over Thomas Reed thwarting the host clubs' chance of a second half surge. Gavin Wheeler and Tom Colling got a full return from their next two inside grids but Pete Young, clearly less than 100% after his earlier spill could only manage a point behind a supercharged Paul Heard in heat 12 and with four heats remaining it was a three horse race between the Midland clubs with Leicester and Wednesfield on 32 and Birmingham in with a shout on 30.

Wednesfield were clearly favourites with four insides to finish and when Scott Docherty capped an impressive day with a win in heat 13 it was down to a two way fight as Nathan Groves incurred another exclusion. Ben Mould rode an outstanding four laps in heat 14 but with Jason Ashford falling and Chris Jewkes securing 3 points with a pass on youngest competitor Arron Morgan, the Aces were odds on. Who better to nail the title than British Champion Lee Aris who delivered the vital win in the penultimate heat and the margin was up to 7 points as Dan Pike got his marching orders after a do or die effort.

The new champions could afford the luxury of resting Mark Griffiths in heat 16 and Roger Cox returned the happiest last place of the day as his team started their victory celebrations.

Further demonstration of the competitive nature of 2010 Division 1 racing came at two South Coast venues as Poole and Hellingly snatched the points in last heat deciders. Poole held an 8 point lead with four races remaining but great rivals Horspath fought back to level the scores only for the home side to open up a 3 point lead in the penultimate heat. Steve Harris competed an unbeaten performance in the decisive heat 18 but two stars of the Poole U.16 squad Leyton Glover and Arron Morgan kept cool heads to clinch the all important minor places.

Two closely matched sides raced nip and tuck at Lower Dicker as Exeter held a slender 1 point advantage going into heat 18 on the tricky Eastbourne circuit. Hellingly sprung a 7-3 in the final race to take their fifth Division 1 win of the season and put a big dent in the Devon clubs title aspirations. One point was all that separated Newport and Southampton at the half way stage at the International Sports Village track but after the break the home side capitalised on their greater strength in depth to run out comfortable winners.

Conference League

Newport maintained their place at the top of the Conference table with a victory over Southampton but 2009 champions Poole remain the only U.18 side in the region with a 100% record after overcoming Horspath. Exeter won their foot of the table clash with Hellingly but there were some encouraging performances from the home side who are new to the league in 2010.

Astley & Tyldesley v Heckmondwike Challenge Match

Astley & Tyldesley welcomed Heckmondwike to compete in a challenge match at Gin Pit. The visitors arrived with three veteran riders, so A & T lent them three juniors to make their team up. The scores were close for the first seven races, as A & T edged into a 38-32 lead. The home team then banged in five maximum 7-3 heat wins in the remaining eight races, to run out convincing 90-60 winners. All of A & T's junior riders rode and scored well, with Luke Jamson, Adam Phillips, Joel Partington, Max Evans and Reece Pollitt only losing to the visitors' best rider Darren Kent. Both Matthew Turnbull and Adam Turnbull weighed in with important third places which ensured heat advantages for A & T in their races. For Heckmondwike, Darren Kent was impressive throughout and lost only to Luke Jamson in heat 13, with Richard Westcott and Alex Green both picking up two second places each.

Round 5 of the North West Go-Race Grand Prix series followed, with the 13 riders handicapped according to age, ability and experience, which once again led to some close final laps. Newcomer Charlotte Gilmore took full advantage of her pole position starts to record a 20 points maximum, narrowly holding off a late charge from another newcomer, Adam Jamson, to win the decisive heat 17. That was Adam's only defeat of the match, as he took runners-up position on the day. Adam Phillips and Max Evans took joint third place on the day, with Adam Turnbull one point behind. A most impressive display was put in by 6 year old newcomer Thomas Whituam, who took two wins and two second places, pedalling furiously to hang on to his favourable starting positions.

With one round remaining, Max Evans leads the series on 60 points, ahead of Adam Turnbull on 54 and Adam Phillips on 53. 36 riders have contested this series so far this season.

East London started badly with two tape exclusions for Steve Woodruff in the opening race, followed by Neil Lester being excluded in the second race for moving at the start. Steve Woodruff suffered a heavy fall on the first corner in race 12 resulting in him being excluded from the rerun.

Manchester Individual League Finals

4th August 2010, Bury | Report: Mike Hack

Bury hosted the first of the three Manchester League Individual Finals evenings, to be held on three successive Wednesdays.

First up were the U-10s and Bury's James Elston recorded a 16 points maximum score to take the title, in his first season of racing. Astley & Tyldesley riders took the next three places, with Adam Turnbull runner-up, Max Evans third and first year rider Ross Green just missing out on a top three slot. All the finalists received an award. Adam Turnbull received the trophy for winning the U-10 Grand Prix series, held over six rounds earlier in the season.

There was a good turn-out of 14 riders for the U-16 event, despite there being a few riders missing on holiday. Heat 2 proved to be a decisive race, as Jake Read was excluded for moving at the start, with Jack Lush taking an easy win from grid 4 in the re-run. Both riders won their remaining races, as Lush took the title with a 20 points maximum score. Adam Phillips and Joe Pickford seized on Read's misfortune to rack up the points and fill the other two rostrum positions, with Phillips' win over Pickford in heat 9 ultimately deciding the runner-up position. Jack Lush was commanding throughout to take an impressive win, with 12 year old Adam Phillips putting in an excellent performance in an older age category for him. Joe Pickford rode consistently to take third place, ahead of James Carter, with Jake Read left to rue his early exclusion, as Stockport riders took four of the top five places.
