Midland League -Sandwell 85 - Birmingham 93
28th June 2009 at Sandwell
Report: John Heard
This was a keenly contested match with both Clubs putting out strong sides to 'outdo' their local neighbours.
Sandwell included ex World Champion Mark Newey for the first time since signing as a secondary rider and backed him up with two other secondary riders; Jamie Brown and Ryan Hoyland from Sheffield. Surpisingly they left out the flying Matt Smith, team manager Pete Dalley presumably preferring to keep him back for the 2nd team match.
The biggest problem facing Birmingham manager Phil Widdas was who to leave out as he had 17 riders reporting for duty in a match that all of the Monarchs wanted to be a part of.
Mark Newey marked his return with a tapes to flag win in heat one, but with Paul Heard right behind him and Tom Sensical expertly keeping Dave Ball at the back, the heat was drawn. Nathan Groves won heat 2 with Chris Timms grabbing third and Birmingham were in front. Lee Smith suffered his only defeat of the afternoon next time out to Marcus Wadhams, whilst heat 4 saw Mark Newey gain his second win of he afternoon over Paul Heard, meaning Birmingham were 2-up at this point.
However, the match changed in heats 7 and 8. Having escaped what looked a clear tapes exclusion for Lee Smith in heat 6, Mark Newey was not so lucky in heat 7 and Mark Winwood and Marcus Wadhams comfortably beat Dave Ball for a 7-2. Heat 8 saw Paul Heard & Tom Sensical ride a brilliant first turn against Russ Evans and Ryan Hoyland and it was another 7 point haul for Birmingham - half time 38 - 51.
Sandwell then rallied at the start of the 2nd half with Evans and Hoyland getting a 7-3 over Wadhams and Winwood. Two races later Smith and Brown did the same to Heard and Sensical. Result? - lead cut to 6 points. Birmingham then had the luxury of Marcus Wadhams and Domic Rhycharski off the 'ins' against Ryan Hoyland and Scott Millward. The Birmingham two responded accordingly with a 7 - 3. Knowing the match was all but won, Birmingham chose to team ride the next two races letting the Sandwell rider get away but keeping his team mate at the back - the 2 5-5's meaning they only needed finishers in the last two races.
The final result showed an 8 point victory for Birmingham but with Rycharski unbeaten from his three reserve rides, there was always the opportunity for Phil Widdas to use him further if he had needed. Once again Birmingham rode as a team always looking for their partners - the fact they provided less race winners than the hosts showing how valuable this team ethic is.
Final word to ref Al Bentley who handled a tricky watch very well - well done Al.

2nd team - Sandwell 59 Birmingham 57
Sandwell had to call Tony Bowen and Pete Dalley out of retirement but could only manage a 5 man team. Birmingham chose to put the three young Winwoods (Billy, Reece and Ryan) in the team at the expense of more senior riders.
As expected Scott Millward and Matt Smith rode really well for the home team as did Andy James, Paul Timms and Phil Widdas for Birmingham. The really disappointing thing was that for the second time this year Sandwell did not allow the three youngsters their points for completing the races - bearing in mind they would only ever have to race three laps at their age this is doing nothing to encourage youngsters to participate. However a big well done to Matt Smith and Scott Millward who very sportingly raced heat 13 at the same pace as 6 year olds Ryan and Billy which meant a lot to the two lads concerned.
Result
Sandwell 59: Scott Millward 18, Matt Smith 12+1, Tony Bowen 12+1, Pete Dalley 9+2, Ricki Johnson 8+1
Birmingham 57: Andy James 16, Paul Timms 14, Phil Widdas 10+1, Mark Fletcher 6+1, Matty Pearson 5+1, Billy winwood 4, Ryan Winwood 2, Reece Winwood - 3 4th places.
Thanks to Lee Smith for doing a good job refereeing this one.

Bury staged Round 5 of the Manchester League Grand Prix series on Wednesday evening, with a good turn out of riders.
A & T started the night as clear leaders of the Division 1 (senior) league, but took a blow when Mike Hack pulled out after one ride, due to suffering a recurrence of a pulled calf muscle, thereby conceding a "guaranteed" 5 points. Sheffield's win puts them 1 point clear, with one round to go.

Northern League - Astley & Tyldesley v Hull
28th June 2009, Astley
Astley & Tyldesley suffered a whitewash defeat, 126-50, at the hands of Hull at Gin Pit on a hot Sunday afternoon. A & T had a whole host of riders who didn't make themselves available for a variety of reasons, as they went down to their biggest ever home defeat. Luke Jamson put up a brave fight for the home side, but Hull took revenge for their opening day home defeat at the hands of A & T, by scoring maximum points in every race.

Luke Jamson played a real captain's role with two race wins and twice shepherding his debutant partner, Matthew J. Turnbull, for a shared heat behind Matt Beharrell. For Hull, Beharrell raced unbeaten, with Lewis Aylmer losing only to Jamson.

East Newport v Hellingly
28th June 2009, East Newport
Report: Gilbert Davis
Last Sunday 28th June East Newport Cycle Speedway division one team lost a hard fought match away to Hellingly Lions 95-85.
On the notoriously difficult, but well prepared East Sussex circuit the young East End Team produced a performance to equal any previous performances by the Go-ride/Clubmark team in its short four year history.
From the start the Eastenders were quick from the gates adapting to the track's tight bends, with only a few basic errors preventing the team from leading the match at half time. The second half saw the home team build up a 14 point advantage, but the Eastenders hit back with several heat wins to narrowly fall short of the winning score.
ENCSC always win and lose as a team, but the performances of Aaron Hughes, Louis Harvey, Ryan Lewis and debutant Jack Turner deserve special praise.
Scores
Louis Harvey 15 from 5 rides
Matt Davis 6+1 from 4 rides
Aaron Hughes 18+1 from 6 rides
Mike Rice 10+4 from 5 rides
Nigel Clark 4+1 from 3 rides
Rob Absalom 11+1 from 4 rides
Jack Turner 9+1 from 4 rides
Ryan Lewis 12 from 5 rides
Division Two
East Newport's division two side gained their second victory of the season beating Hellingly 53-41.
Each rider produced solid performances with team debutant Earl Bloomfield top scoring and nine year old Callum Goward both looking particularly impressive.
Scores
Dan Bock 10+2
Callum Gaward 7+1

South West Division One Horspath 93 Exeter 86
Sunday June 28th
Report: Geoff Gamage
This was a great advert for the South West with some fast and furious racing, the basically young Exeter team almost pulling off a win with Thomas Reed starring ably backed by Dominic McCrae and Craig Nethercott with experienced heads Mark Reed and Dave Dart chipping in. For Hammers Mike Morgans came in for Matuesz Szymczak / Steve Harris who were in Poland for Matty's wedding, Morgans was racing injured though with a bad ankle. With the exception of Dave Carmichael the other Hammers all had one bad ride even the normally dependable Wayne Hutt and Mark Boaler however they managed just to hang on.
