With the ongoing success of the Great Britain squad at the ICSF World Cycle Speedway Championships in Australia, British Cycling can today confirm the dates and venues for the 2024 cycle speedway national and international calendar.
The national calendar will kick off with the British Indoor Championships in Coventry over the weekend of 13-14 January, with Matt Hill and Lauren Hookway looking to retain their titles after close competitions in 2023.
June will host some of the biggest national competitions of the year, with the Home Internationals and Women’s Pairs competitions taking place on Saturday 1 June in Leicester, and the Men’s and Juniors Battle of Britain taking place in Coventry on Sunday 2 June. At the end of the month, the British Club Championships will take place in Hull on 29-30 June, with Kesgrave Panthers looking to claim the title once again after three years of dominance.
The August Bank Holiday weekend (24-26 August) will host the British Individual Championships in the South East and Eastern region, which has seen Paul Heard been crowned the champion three out of the past four editions. The Little League Championships in Horspath will take place on Saturday 31 August, before the season will finish off at the Cycle Speedway Cup in Wednesfield over the weekend of 21-22 September.
The Women’s Battle of Britain and Grand Prix will take place once again, consisting of four rounds across the country, with specific venues to be confirmed.
The European Club Championships will see the best clubs from Europe take to the start lines in Newport and East Newport from Saturday 4 – Monday 6 May, before individual riders and national teams can go for glory at the European Championships in Torun, Poland on Friday 26 – Sunday 28 July.
Mike Hack, Chair of British Cycling’s Cycle Speedway Commission, said:
“The Cycle Speedway Commission is pleased to confirm dates and venues for the 2024 national and international competitions. The major events for each rider are placed roughly four weeks apart to encourage optimum participation. A highlight will be the first ever staging of an international tournament in Wales, when the Newport and East Newport clubs will jointly stage the European Club Championships, over the early May Bank Holiday weekend.”
British Cycling Sport and Participation Director, Jonathan Day, said:
“As our riders continue to make their mark at the world championships in Australia, we’ve been working closely with the Cycle Speedway Commission and clubs to plot out another strong calendar of events on home soil.
“We’re particularly pleased to see the European Club Championships returning to the UK for the first time since 2018, thanks to the support of our two Newport clubs.”
