About our club

The Shaftesbury Cycling Club HQ is based at Mountnessing between Brentwood & Chelmsford (CM15 0UG) from which the club runs a well-supported Wednesday Evening 10 miles Time Trial series. The club promotes an Open 50 event (the 50 having started in 1906) held on the fast E2 course, with several competition records set, this event is very popular attracting a high quality field. Club TT events are held on fast and sporting courses, thus providing opportunities for all riders to take part.

In addition the club hold two Audax UK Randonnée events a year run from the Club "Hut" at Ugley (CM22 6JD). Winter events include Turbo Training sessions and Club Runs organised from the Mountnessing HQ. The club is active on social media on Facebook and WhatsApp platforms and has over 130 members covering a very wide age range with members participating in most areas of cycling activity. Details of all these activities may be found on the club Website.

Why the Shaftesbury? - after all London was and still is a long way from Dorset. Well the Hall where they first met was founded by Lord Shaftesbury, the 7th Earl, and the Club was supported by and is named after him. Not only has the name remained unchanged all these years but the Club Colours of Cardinal and Black were chosen in 1890 and only the Gold trimmings have been added since.
