About our club

We organise cycle speedway training and racing, road and off road leisure activities.
The Astley & Tyldesley club was formed in November 1989, as a Cycle Speedway Club. Club members raised funds and built the cycle speedway race track at the Astley & Tyldesley Miners’ Welfare Club, Meanley Road, Gin Pit. The track was officially opened in April 1991 by the Mayor of Wigan. The club has continued to improve the track and facilities, to make it the North’s Regional Cycle Speedway Centre from 1997 and the North West's Cycle Speedway Academy from 2002. The club has also attained "Go-Ride" status for meeting British Cycling's junior rider development criteria and "Clubmark Accreditation" for meeting Sport England's criteria for being a "high quality sports club". The club won the Wigan Sports Club of the Year Award in 2011, 2015 and 2018, as well as winning British Cycling's Go-Ride Club of the Year in 2017. The Club expanded its activities in 2015, with our riders competing in other cycling disciplines, resulting in the Club becoming a Cycling Club. The Club secured funding with assistance from British Cycling to re-build the Gin Pit Cycle Speedway Track in 2016. This allowed the track to be rebuilt and re-profiled to modern standards, with new fencing, drainage and shale to improve the experience for all riders. Our club members compete in a wide range of different cycling disciplines. We successfully staged the European Cycle Speedway Championships in 2022.
