When it comes to bike racing, only one rider or team can stand on the top step of the podium – but winning is about so much more than that: it’s all of the experiences, encounters and breakthroughs that make cycling such a special community to be part of.
By turning up to race you are already winning – and whether you want to be part of the atmosphere or at the sharp end of the action, racing is one of the most rewarding things you can do on a bike. Our events are incredibly varied with levels to suit everyone from amateur to expert - and with seven disciplines the cycling world is vast, while also feeling friendly, close-knit and supportive.
Off the bike there is plenty to get involved with, too. Our sport is only made possible thanks to a group of committed volunteers and officials, and by giving up your time you will be repaid with skills, smiles, friendships and brilliant days out in abundance.
Due to the impact of lockdowns and local restrictions, our sport lost a total of 4,500 events last year as a result of the pandemic. It’s now time to reboot grassroots cycling to ensure that it returns bigger, better and stronger than ever before - and we’d love you to be part of it. Getting involved means taking your place on a start line, volunteering at a local event or developing new skills as a coach or official. And most importantly of all, by doing so, everyone wins.
Get a taste of the action
Words on a page will never be able to truly recreate the atmosphere of a race, and while we’d encourage you to try out the real thing, here is a taster of all the kinds of racing we have to offer, which we hope will inspire you to sign up for an event soon.
Want to get started?
As Covid-19 restrictions continue to lift there is plenty of racing to get involved with – and more events being added to the calendar all the time. You will likely already have the most important bit of kit: a bike. But if you don’t: no problem! You can start your journey to racing at lots of locations, with many offering the opportunity to hire a bike to help you to give it a go.
You can find out more about our long-term plans to support our cycling disciplines here.
Fast starts, finding rhythm, bike control and giving it your all; BMX racing gives you a good helping of adrenaline and superb technical skill.
Drop-offs, hot seats, rock gardens and roots; gravity racing covers downhill, four-cross and enduro. If you love off-road descents, these are the events for you.
Bunch racing, breakaways, time trials and climbs; there is plenty going on in the world of road racing. Explore the range of events to suit all types of rider and tiered categories to make sure you’ll get the most out of your ride.
Mountain bike cross-country (XC) racing
Endurance, adventure, skill and style; XC is all about taking your off-road riding up a level and trying to get around technical courses in the fastest time.
Cycle speedway racing
Short races, hard sprints, tight corners and close contact; cycle speedway is steeped in British cycling history and has a fantastic community atmosphere. Riders race four laps of a 70-metre dirt track to win points, building incredible cornering skill.
Sprint tactics, stamina, banked corners and no brakes; track racing takes place at specialist facilities, but many clubs also run grass track racing to make this exciting discipline more widely available. Be sure to check your nearest facility as an outdoor track could be nearer than you think.
All-ability, all-weather, intense and inclusive; cyclo-cross racing is a family affair with predominantly winter events for all age groups and an incredible community. You can race on a cyclo-cross or mountain bike, making ‘cross a great starting point for trying out racing.
We’ll be sharing lots of resources and inspiration to get you ready to over the coming months. Follow #EveryoneWins for all the latest on social – and be sure to tag your own race adventures!
