In this week’s return to sport feature we spoke to Velo Club Newport who have recently restarted group rides upon completion of the necessary COVID training provided by Welsh Cycling.

The coronavirus and subsequent lockdown had a big impact on club cycling life, and whilst all competition has been suspended it was not just the “race” focused clubs and members who were missing out. Group cycling is part of many club's activities, the social reasons can be a big draw for many looking to get more involved in the sport. Having the opportunity to ride with likeminded people can do wonders for a rider’s mental wellbeing as well.

With the restriction on rides clearly having an impact on this aspect of member’s lives, Welsh Cycling has partnered with the Welsh Sports Association to create an online training resource that complied with the Welsh Governments requirements to allow groups to restart rides.

Ian Wood, the clubs secretary and newly appointed COVID Officer said: “We got into contact with our development officer as soon as we found out restrictions were being lifted partially for sports. Dan (Our Development Officer) told us about the training course and that two places would be funded by Welsh Cycling”.

“Like so many of our clubs, Velo Club Newport play a critical role in supporting more people to take up and enjoy cycling. It was clear the club were just as keen as anyone to restart rides in a safe and responsible manor when restrictions allowed. We had a virtual catch up about what would and would not be allowed to take place on a ride and talked through the training and the requirements that would have to be put into place to allow for the safe return.

"It’s great to see the club returning once again and to provide a link for local people who have discovered cycling and the opportunity to ride within a supportive social community during this time” said Dan Coast, Welsh Cycling Development Officer.

Welsh Cycling will continue to fund two places per club/group for the Welsh Sports Association until the end of August.
