Scottish Cycling will be awarding Junior category medals at standard distance Scottish National Time Trial Championships from 2016, starting with the 10 mile Time Trial Championship on 8th May.  Currently Juniors are awarded medals in other Scottish National Championship events, but not in Time Trial.  Medals will not be awarded at the National Olympic Time Trial Championship and the National 100 Mile Time Trial Championship in 2016.

The talent racing in the Junior category in Scotland has improved year upon year with more riders gradually getting involved in cycle sport; therefore Scottish Cycling and it’s Road and Track Commission have made this decision to provide a fair opportunity for Juniors to compete for further National Titles.

The deadline for entries into the National 10 mile Time Trial Championship is this Sunday (24th April) at 11.55 pm.

The number of Juniors racing in Scotland has increased significantly across all disciplines in recent years.  Last weekend, a record number of 28 Juniors started and dominated the field at the Dunfermline Road Race, incorporating the Jack Murray Junior Trophy.

The Juniors took 1st and 2nd overall with Alexander MacRae from Speedflex Race team out pacing the well-marked local rider Joe Nally from HardieBikes, who has just returned from competing in the Junior Paris Roubaix, into 2nd place. Glasgow Nightingale’s Sean Stead took 3rd and was the first non-Junior over the finish line. The Juniors took most of the top 15 places in testing winds and wintry showers.

Craig Burn, Chief Executive of Scottish Cycling said:

Scottish Cycling works with clubs across Scotland to help develop and grow the sport. Youth development is incredibly important at grassroots level and therefore it is important to be able to be able to award those Youths when they move into Junior level. Time Trial racing is popular within the cycling community in Scotland and we want to encourage younger riders to get involved and continue to progress in the discipline.”
