Day 4 Round Up

The penultimate day of competition at the British Youth & Junior Track Championships in Manchester was a busy day for Scottish riders, with yet more medals won for the young Scottish riders.

In the U16 boys Scratch race, there were three tough qualifying heats, with the top 8 riders progressing from each heat. With four Scottish riders drawn in the first heat, Stephen Dent (Nevis Cycles), Lewis Stewart (Glasgow Riderz) and Danny Mulholland (Johnstone Wheelers CC) all progressed into the final. In the final heat, Jonathon Hilbourne (Glasgow Riderz) was just pipped at the line to take 9th place. In the final, there were bold moves from Dent and Mulholland to get away early in the race, with Mulholland away from the pack for a half dozen laps before being caught with four to go. Lewis Stewart took 4th place at the finish, in a photo finish.

Jenny Holl (Stirling Bike Club) set a new PB in the U16 girls 2k Pursuit with a time of 2:36.101 which saw her progress into the 5th-8th place final. From there, she finished 6th overall.

In the Junior men’s Keirin championships, Jack Carlin (Glasgow Sprint TCT) won his heat , and put in a strong ride to see him finish 4th in the final.

The final race of the night was the Junior men’s 30km Points race, with Andy Brown (Glasgow Cycle Team), Angus Claxton (Glasgow Cycle Team) and Kyle Johnstone (East Kilbride Road Club) all in the mix.  After the second points sprint, Claxton moved clear of the bunch, with all the Scottish boys fortunately avoiding a crash, and Claxton working with two others to take a lap. With 9 to go, Brown flew off the front of the bunch making a decisive move to take a lap. Going into the bell lap, Brown was tied on points with Bostock in 3rd place, and one sprint left to claim a British medal. As the 49.24kmph race crossed the line, Brown edged out Bostock to take the Bronze medal!
