2020 Welsh Cycling Cyclo-cross League Update

Update - October 19th, 2020

Further to our previous update on the Welsh Cyclo-cross League and with tighter restrictions expected to be announced by the Welsh Government, Welsh Cycling along with its Off-Road Commission, have decided to move to Plan B for the operation of the Welsh Cycling Cyclo-cross League.

  • Plan B: A later, shorter season, comprising of 3 races in Pembrey, held over January/Febraury, again subject to agreement with the local authority and contingent on the relaxation of restrictions. The decision point for this will be Monday the 4th of January 2021.

We are truly thankful for your patience with us during this time, but rest-assured, we will do our best to inform you of any updates when we can.

Once again, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the off-road racing community for bearing with us. There has been unwavering support for racing and a broad understanding of the difficulties. We look forward to getting back to racing as soon as we are permitted to do so.

2020 Welsh Cyclo-cross League Update from Welsh Cycling and its Off-Road Commission - September 20th, 2020

The current coronavirus position in Wales has made planning and holding a cyclocross season very difficult. As of today (29.09.20), local restrictions are in place across much of South, South East and South West Wales, with the threat of further areas being added. Due to the spread of infection of Coronavirus, Welsh government have not given the go-ahead for multiple groups to resume. With the autumn and winter predicted to be very difficult, it would appear unlikely that these conditions will change significantly.

While the short-term situation for racing looks difficult, we are taking a pragmatic approach to planning the off-road racing calendar. So that riders and families can plan their winter activities, we have decided to put in place two plans for cyclocross racing, operating around two decision points:

  • Plan A: There will be a limited season comprising of 4 races, using Pembrey and possibly Builth Wells (subject to agreement from the landowners and local authorities at that time). One race would be held at the end of November, followed by fixtures in December, January, and February, respectively. The decision point for this will be Monday the 19th of October and will be subject to the go-ahead from Welsh Government to increase the numbers within mass-participation events and the removal of local restrictions. If this is not the case, we move on to plan B.
  • Plan B: A later, shorter season, comprising of 3 races in Pembrey, held over Jan-Feb again subject to agreement with the local authority and contingent on the relaxation of restrictions. The decision point for this will be Monday the 4th of January 2021.

In both cases, Plan A and Plan B will be supported by Welsh Cycling with resource provided to a combination of organising clubs.

If by the 4th of January we are still unable to hold a limited cyclocross season, we will turn our attention to MTB (XC and Downhill) with the intention of providing the best race experience we can, even if it means adaptations to the existing formats. In the meantime, we would encourage all riders to ride within the scope of the limitations and enjoy some socially distanced off-road riding with team mates and riding partners; autumn remains a wonderful time to be on a cyclocross or mountain bike.

With events currently going on over in England during the month of October, we wanted to remind those of you currently living in lockdown areas within Wales that you are not permitted to leave your county borough and compete within these races.

On a final note, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the off-road racing community for bearing with us. There has been unwavering support for racing and a broad understanding of the difficulties. We look forward to getting back to racing as soon as we are permitted to do so.
