In November 2014 a hugely successful Women’s only cycling initiative was introduced to Wales. The British Cycling HSBC UK Breeze Programme aims to provide a nurturing environment in which women can gain confidence on their bike, supported by trained ride leaders.

Five months after its introduction, the first ride was run in Ceredigion; a ten mile, off road ride for women and children. Nia Richards, who ran the ride, was the first trained HSBC UK Breeze Champion from the county.

‘I became a Breeze champion as I couldn't continue to watch on the side lines whilst my children attended their cycling sessions.  I wanted to experience some training, and manage my asthma, as exercise can increase lung capacity. The encouragement and enthusiasm I received from my family and the Cycling club, during the early months, I still continue to carry through to my riders today,’ says Nia.

Since her first ride, Nia has run a further 235, with the total number of participants being 520, a fantastic achievement. Her rides run throughout the year, and many of the riders that she has supported have gone on to join her to do other challenges like Sportives, Cyclocross races, Crit road races and mountain biking.

‘When you try new things yourself, it encourages other Breeze riders to give it a go. Last year I was thrilled to support a team of four Breeze Riders in training and completion of the Cardiff Velothon, and this year several of my previous participants have trained to become Champions themselves.’

One of these new Champs, Lorraine Langford, has already run 24 rides with 55 participants attending.

So what does Ceredigion have to offer cyclists?

There are lots of beautiful cycle tracks and circular cycle rides to and from the towns in Ceredigion, local cycling clubs, and every year the county hosts the Aber CycleFest, with many of the UKs top cyclists making an appearance on and off road. If social cycling is more your bag there are also plenty of cycle friendly cafés, pubs and restaurant to visit on your ride.

‘Looking ahead, I hope that Breeze in Ceredigion goes from strength to strength, and that it offers increased rides to all abilities and background. It is important that we promote good health for Women; on safe, led rides, so that they can experience the beauty of Ceredigion, make new friends; all while taking part in a fun form of aerobic exercise,’ says Nia.
