Brian Cookson OBE was re-elected as President of British Cycling for a term of 12 months at the 2011 National Council held on Saturday 12 November in Manchester. Board members Bob Howden and Colin Docker were re-elected for a further three years, whilst changes to Board saw George Gilbert elected (for a period of three years) and Vic Hopkin’s term coming to an end.

Over 100 delegates attended the meeting, with discussions and votes taking place on a number of key issues. Motions carried included the commencement of an honorarium paid to the President to reflect how that role has developed over the years in line with the substantial growth of the organisation. Delegates also voted in favour of changes to British Cycling’s disciplinary regulations which establish a more structured and consistent approach across the federation’s different disciplines and regions.

Ian Drake, Chief Executive of British Cycling, addressing delegates at the start of the meeting, said: “It’s been another fantastic year for us across all areas of activity. For me, two achievements highlight exactly what we’re striving to achieve in terms of inspiration to participation, namely a British team dominating the men’s race at the Road World Championships and British Cycling reaching the landmark of 40,000 members. Membership growth of over 20% in particular is something we should all feel proud about. This bucks the trend of most sports at present and upcoming planned initiatives should enable us to maintain and build further upon this impressive rate of growth.

“The root of our success is our membership, and the tireless work and dedication of those who give up their time to support the growth of our support across the country. Our continued thanks and appreciation go out to them all.”

During the course of the meeting, the Annual Report was received and approved, as were the Audited Accounts for 2010/11, whilst the North West Region was presented with the Sunday Mirror Trophy for the greatest annual increase in membership growth having achieved a 32% rise over the past 12 months.

Delegates also heard from Performance Director Dave Brailsford who provided an update on both the Great Britain Cycling Team and Team Sky, and an insight into plans and preparations for the year ahead.

Brian Cookson, British Cycling President, said: “I’m honoured to have been re-elected for the 15th consecutive year and it continues to be my privilege to serve the organisation, particularly as we approach the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games. The growth of our sport since the last Games in Beijing has been immense and I have no doubt that London 2012 will provide a further boost in terms of participation and membership amongst those who will be inspired by the performances of our elite riders.

“Finally, I would like to thank Vic Hopkin for his contribution over the years both within the South East Region and at a national level, and I hope he maintains an active involvement in the future.”
