Clubs across the country are being urged to help inspire children to discover their potential by opening their doors to aspiring young cyclists during the first weekend of the UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire this September.

For the first time since 1982, the world’s best riders will descend on towns across the region to compete for the coveted rainbow jersey. British Cycling wants to ensure that this once in a generation event helps to inspire a new wave of cyclists across the whole country, whilst guaranteeing that every child in Britain gets the chance to ride a bike.

British Cycling is encouraging all clubs across the country to take part in the nationwide initiative which aims to get as many children on bikes as possible during the first weekend of the UCI Road World Championships (21st and 22nd September). We are asking clubs to host their own ‘mini world championship’ events and register a Go-Ride race to give children a taste of the thrill of racing, whilst enabling them to replicate their idols as the elite racers begin competing for the iconic rainbow stripes.

Elinor Barker, reigning Olympic and world champion, said: “My cycling journey started at a HSBC UK Go-Ride club which shows the potential of these sessions to inspire young children to go on to compete at an elite level. It is crucial that when events like the road world championships are hosted on UK soil we capitalise on this and use them to help inspire more children to discover cycling.

“HSBC UK Go-Ride can play a huge role in this and are an ideal way to engage novice racing cyclists. The relaxed structure and ability to change race styles are a great way to ensure everyone is catered for and I’d love to see all clubs get involved in this once in a generation opportunity to get more children on bikes than ever before!”
