British Cycling Go-Ride is a fantastic addition to the curriculum and with a few simple steps your school could soon offer inclusive cycle coaching to pupils, encouraging a healthy lifestyle, active learning and physical literacy.

Whether youngsters aspire to become the next Laura Kenny, Geraint Thomas or Quillan Isidore – or simply need support in getting active and riding confidently, your local British Cycling development team can provide all that’s needed to introduce cycling to your current physical education provision.

Our offer

Experienced Go-Ride Coaches can contribute to your school’s physical education and sport timetable, delivering fun coaching sessions on-site. Providing a fleet of high quality mountain bikes, helmets and coaching equipment, our coaches will pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport.

All that’s required is a large flat space to coach on, a member of school staff to be present and the same group of students available to attend the whole series. Initially, we would work with you to provide a series of fun and challenging coaching sessions aligned with your existing offering. These are appropriate for all students, helping to inspire physical achievement and personal motivation.

Explore the pathway

Beyond these coaching sessions we can help you to instil cycling and its health benefits within your school, through staff training, a young volunteer programme and the School Games.

Each of the sections below provide a brief introduction to the pathway your school could follow. To find out more about any stage, just get in touch with your regional Go-Ride team or download our Go-Ride for Schools flyer (PDF).

Cycling for schools

Our entry-level coaching course for the wider school workforce provides everything your staff will need to deliver grassroots cycling and coaching skills to the pupils in your school.

The qualification enables employees and volunteers aged 18 and over to provide cycling activities within a school environment, building on the enthusiasm created by the Go-Ride sessions.

Go-Ride School Club

On completion of the Go-Ride sessions, we encourage schools to explore the feasibility of setting up their own cycling club to offer regular cycling activities.

A Go-Ride school club provides an opportunity for young people to get involved in all aspects of cycling, be that developing riding skills, racing or volunteering. Your local Go-Ride team will provide support as you take the necessary steps to create a club, which can run either as an after-school activity or as part of your physical education curriculum.

School Games

The School Games is a national package of events from the Youth Sport Trust, designed to help schools provide more opportunities for pupils to thrive and succeed in sport.

Through a programme of intra- and inter-school competitions, the initiative is a proven environment to enthuse young riders and highlight champions of the future.

British Cycling Go-Ride Racing

If cycling is not part of your area’s School Games schedule, you can still deliver Go-Ride Racing activities.

Go-Ride Racing is a British Cycling programme that provides young riders with a chance to experience entry-level competition in a friendly and controlled environment alongside their peers.

Cycling Award for Young Volunteers

The Cycling Award for Young Volunteers (CAYV) is similar to the Duke of Edinburgh Award, where young people commit to developing skills and supporting community activity in order to complete bronze, silver and gold awards.

Promoting leadership and organisation, the initiative also helps to support grassroots cycling where volunteers are the foundation of the sport.
