There is huge potential for growth in everyday cycling but we need to provide the right environment by cycle-proofing our roads and junctions. The fact is that unless we build designated space for cycling –only the bold and the brave will do it.

Two-thirds of Brits would like to cycle more if they felt safer

There may have been some disagreement in the past about the value of providing segregated cycle lanes, there isn’t now. Built to best practice standards they can support all types of cycling from kids to commuters, making it safer for everyone.

British Cycling, along with Scottish Cycling and Welsh Cycling recommends the wide spread adoption of segregated cycle lanes alongside main roads. These should be supported by quiet routes, where motor traffic is filtered out and traffic calming on residential roads.

These measures must be the essential components of any local cycling infrastructure plan.

Cycle lanes and routes need to be comfortable, attractive and aspirational to encourage new users, marketed just as you would any other new product.

Networks must be coherent and continuous giving the user confidence that they will find their way and not be left to fend for themselves on a busy road or junction. Rural roads popular for cycling must be well maintained have a lower speed limit in place.

This process should be supported by national government through the provision of match funding, setting best practice standards, ensuring properly enforced rules of the road enhance cycle safety and that only safe vehicles and drivers are allowed on the road.

Developing convenient and attractive cycling lanes is the biggest part of the solution but it will not succeed if treated in isolation. Cycle-proofing – where cycling is accommodated in all new developments – should be incorporated into planning policy and part of all transport developments.
