Report: Royston Rockets at East Anglia Winter Series Round 3

Event: 12th December 2010 | Report: Phil Townsend

The Rockets have been quite over the last few weeks with club coaching and practice events being cancelled due to the weather so it was good to get back to racing again last Sunday with the 3rd round of the East Anglia BMX 2010/11 Regional Winter Series being hosted by the Peterborough BMX Club. The freezing weather running up to the event undoubtedly kept the rider numbers low but with over 80 competitors signing on for the event the day was packed with competitive racing. The track was frozen solid as the club members started the preparations but rode well during practice and the early rounds of racing but the rapid increase in temperature started a thaw that left the track very sticky in places making the riding hard going for young and old alike.

Royston's action started with the 8-9 year class with James King who eased into the main final where he took 1st place and in the 10-11 year class Miles Fisher led the pack but as usual was pushed hard all day by Daniel Blanche who finished in 2nd. The girls in the 11-13 year class were led home by Faye Godfrey and in the 17+ Female category 2nd place went to Helen Nicholl with Lori Blanche close behind in 3rd. The 14-16 year group saw another 2nd place going to Jordan Godfrey with James Handleigh taking 6th in this very competitive class. In the Masters (30+) class Alex Shore-Nye took 5th place and in the 17+ cruiser classes Sam King took 5th just ahead of team mate Carl Birt who finished in 6th.

Royston's forthcoming events are published on the club web site but are weather dependant and subject to change. See more about the club and BMX racing in the region at www.roystonrockets.co.uk and the BMX East Regional site on www.bmxeast.com or ring 01763 260959 for more information on BMX racing.
