The cream of young British cycling talent gathered in Scarborough on Sunday for the final round of the British Cycling Youth Circuit Series.

Under 16 boys

Will Tidball (1st Chard Wheelers) took the win in the under 16s boys race, his first of the series, but it was Jim Brown (VCUK PH-MAS) who snatched the series title from under the nose of Matt Shaw (Solihull CC) after finishing one place above him in the race.

It would be an attack on the third lap of the top circuit by Brecon Burnett (Maindy Flyers Youth) that defined the opening first half the contest.

Burnett left the big field looking at each other while he happily pumped his legs to get a quick 20-second lead that lead would ultimately fail the first time the race hit the climb.

The field closed in on the leader and pulled him back before the race rode back into the sunlight at the top of the hill.

Matt Ellis (SRAM Youth) attacked the field the next time around, the race now splitting at the rear of proceedings, such was the quick pace on the climb. But still no one could make a break stick, the chase group still with the series’ big names policing events.

Small attacks tried their chances but on the penultimate lap VCUK’s Matt Taylor jumped away from the head of the field.

His lead would last until the final climb on the hill where the chasers would catch and pass the lone rider.

A group of some 18 riders hit the top of the climb together but as the road flattened it was Tidball who had the legs to take the line first just ahead of Harry Gillett (Solihull CC) and Adam Scarffe (Team RL360 IOM). Will Draper took fourth and Jim Brown took fifth, just pipping Matt Shaw.

Under 16 girls

Pfeiffer Georgi (LIV Cycling) took a fine win in the under 16 girls race to cement the overall series title.

Georgi has arguably dominated the series taking four race wins before taking to the start line at Scarborough.

Although some of the top runners in the series were missing, it was all but a lap of honour but Pfeiffer who was out for the race win.

She bided her time to perfection, attacking the field on the penultimate climb of the day.
The opening five laps on the top circuit failed to cause any ripples in the field and the whole race stayed as one until the riders hit the climb for the final three laps which, as in previous races, would see a lot of the field drift out towards the back of the race.

A large group stuck together at the head of the race and the result looked as though it would come from a final dash to the line but with two climbs remaining, Georgi started to poke her nose out of the front of the race and although Elspeth Grace (Welwyn Wheelers) and Corrinne Side (Cycle Sport Pendle) tried to respond, the race leader had already got the measure of the field and rode the final lap alone to take the win and the series.

Grace took a well-earned second place whilst Side held on for third after Charlotte Dalton (Jadan-Weldtite) put in a last-lap attack.

Under 14 girls

Becky Surridge took a fine win in the under 14s girls race in the final round of the British Cycling Youth Circuit Series at Scarborough.

The VC Londres rider has been dominant throughout the 2016 series and coming into the last round has taken five wins from the previous six rounds, ensuring the series win.

It was a slow ride around the four laps of the flat top circuit in the opening race of the day, the field keeping their tanks full before the first of the two laps on the big circuit taking in the tough climb towards the end of the lap.

The first real attack of the race came the first time up the climb on the penultimate lap of the race. Surridge, along with Eva Young (Pedal Power RT) and Ava Oxley-Szilagyi (PH-MAS VCUK) scampered away from the field and the trio pulled out a gap of around 20 seconds which they would hold for the final lap.

Charlotte-Louise McGreevy (WXC World Racing) tried to hook onto the back of the three but the climb proved too tough.

Eve Barrow (Salt Ayre Cog) and Imogen Chastell (Welwyn Wheelers) were holding fifth and sixth place heading up the rest of the field which was now strung out across the climb.

The final climb saw Surridge and Young having the legs to drop Oxley-Szilagyi, the pair coming into the finish straight some 20 seconds ahead of the VCUK rider. Surridge crossed the line to take the win a few bike-lengths ahead of Young.

Under 14 boys

Joe Pidcock (Chevin Cycles) took the win in the under 14s boys race and secured the series title overall.

The win was Piddock’s first victory in the 2016 series but consistent results throughout the season ensured the title for the Chevin rider.

Coming into the last round, it was Junior Jackson (Mossley CRT) who headed up the series by a single point from Pidcock but a sixth place wasn’t enough to retain his slender lead at the top of the standings.

As with the girls race, the opening laps would be a steady roll around the famous motorsport circuit, the field keeping their powder dry for the last four laps on the big circuit.

Once onto the full circuit, the race would take its shape. The field would start to break up on the tough climb and although a large group remained as one on the first climb, the second time around a group of some 20 riders rode away as the road went upwards.

It was the final lap that saw Pidcock, Will Corkhill (Team RL360 IOM) and Lucien Cuming (East Bradford CC) make their move, the trio coming out of the climb at the head of the race.

Pidcock held the lead to take the win just ahead of Corkhill and Cuming who got the better of a chasing Archie Peet (Team Milton Keynes).
