Are you a Welsh Cycling Volunteer? Don’t miss your chance to get rewarded for the hours you put into the sport.  Welsh Cycling launched a Volunteer Recognition Programme on 1st February 2019. The aim of the programme is for volunteers to log any hours they complete using the App VolHours, to reach 100, 250 and 500 hours’ worth of volunteering. Once volunteers reach each marker they will be awarded with a reward for their efforts and dedication.

This case study is from Gower Riders Club Chair, Phil Walton about his experience using volhours.

Question:  How easy and simple was the App (VolHours) to download & setup?

Answer: The download was easy as was the set up. Nothing difficult about it at all.

Question: How simple is the app to use? (E.g. To log your hours)

Answer: Initially the app didn’t seem very intuitive at all. I was hitting the clock expecting to see a  window pop up for me to populate with the time I wanted to log. However, once I used the ‘How  to use guide’ provided by Welsh Cycling, this made using the app very straight forward.

Question: What motivated you to sign up to the app?

Answer: I see the app as a really positive thing. Everyone in the club commits so much time that I think logging it and demonstrating that is a positive thing.  In a recent job interview I've been able to cite my volunteer experience and now have tangible evidence for what that commitment looks like.

Question: How many hours are you aiming to achieve in your first year?

Answer: I've have not set myself a target. I would like to understand what an entire years’ worth of volunteering for my club looks like. It's a difficult balancing act with working full time, having quality family time and also volunteering.

Question: Do you feel using the app is a good way for Welsh Cycling to recognise the work of the volunteer workforce?

Answer: I guess that depends on what the recognition is.  Different things motivate people in different ways. Being able to recognise volunteer’s efforts is really important and it is good that Welsh Cycling are beginning to do this. The difficult thing I think is being able to measure quality.

If you also volunteer then make sure you download the app and start logging your hours.

A massive thank you to all the volunteers that make cycling happen across Wales. We hope this app can offer support, recognition and rewards for everything you do.
