Sussex Track League

Preston Park, Brighton | 20 April 2011
Report: Vern McClelland

The second week of the Sussex Track League was blessed with perfect weather conditions, a warm sunny evening with no wind. A total of 66 riders signed on spread across the various age groups.

The evening opened with a 6 lap scratch race for the seniors, and after a fairly steady start just after half distance a group of three consisting of VC Jubilee riders Nick Smith and Ashley Dennis with Paul Barnard from Team Terminator detached themselves from the bunch and working well together opened up a good gap which they maintained until the finish where Ashley came in first followed by Paul with Nick taking third place. The rest of the field were led in by Jack Hoyle of Preston Park Youth CC who just pipped Brock Duncumb-Rogers, Progressive Cycle Coachingfor fourth place.

The Youth A & B 4 lap scratch started very sedately for the first lap, then on the second lap Zak Corum-Haynes of VC Jubilee tried to inject a little pace which stretched out the field for a little while but at the bell the field was still all together and it was Jake Deakin of Preston Park Youth who took the victory, followed by VC Jubilee teammates Connor Murphy and Oliver Moors.

3 riders lined up for the first youth E race a 1 lap scratch and a tight finish saw Rory Burke take the win from Samuel Jaques, both riding for Preston Park Youth with George Abbot-Stacey taking third place.

Next up was the youth D 1 lap scratch and a competitive race saw Bradley Burke take first from Rahul Fortescue-Talwar and Miranda Wright, all riding for Preston Park Youth.

The Youth C opening scratch race over 2 laps saw last year's Youth D champion Noah Ridgway-Brown triumph from Isaac Wright and Ben Tucker all three representing Preston Park Youth.

The Senior devil saw 31 riders take the start line and conscious of the short evening it was decided to take 2 riders out each lap for the first part of the race and then finish with a scratch for the remainder of the field. Almost from the first lap a group of three detached themselves from the bunch Ben Miller and Steve Kane from Brighton Excelsior with once again Ashley Dennis getting in the action at the front of the race.

The three managed to stretch out their lead to half a lap which they were able to maintain to the finish where Ashley Dennis took his second victory of the evening, followed by Ben Miller in second and Steve Kane taking third place. The remainder who had avoided being taken out were led over by Lee Povey from Team Terminator.

The Youth A & B Dash didn't live up to its name and the slow pace played into the hands of fast finisher Jake Deakin who took his second victory of the evening with Connor Murphy once again finishing as runner up and Gabriel Parle of Preston Park Youth finishing third.

A new introduction being tried at Preston Park this year is 200 metre sprints for the younger age groups and the first of these saw 4 Youth E riders line up and in a reverse of the first two places in the opening race Samuel Jaques finished in front of Rory Burke with Archie Sloan of VC Jubilee who had missed the first race taking third place. The second 200 metre race for the Youth D riders saw a repeat of the first three from the first race with Bradley Burke winning from Rahul Fortescue-Talwar and Miranda Wright.

The Youth C sprint saw a second victory for Noah Ridgway-Brown with Bethany Lewis of VC Jubilee second and Ben Tucker once again third.

The Senior points race saw a dominant performance from Brock Duncumb-Rogers of Progressive Cycle Coaching taking maximums on each scoring lap, Ashley Dennis continuing his successful evening with second place and Jack Hoyle taking third.

Final race for the Youth E was a block handicap and here it was Archie Sloan making the most of his allowance to win from George Abbott-Stacey second and Rory Burke third.

The Youth D block handicap saw Bradley Burke take his third win of the evening from Ben Battle and Georgina Burnett both of Preston Park Youth.

The Youth C points race saw Noah Ridgway-Brown take the first maximum and then disappear from the race. The remaining maximums were all taken by Joe Hill of Preston Park and with the two points for third place he picked up in the first scoring lap ensured that he ran out a deserved winner. In second place was Bethany Lewis and in third place Ben Tucker.

With light starting to fade the Youth A & B devil was made into a devil/scratch race and after 3 eliminations from the field the rest of the race was run as a scratch race and at the finish it was Jake Deakin who crossed the line first to take his third win of the evening and Connor Murphy to take his third second place and OllyPriddle of VC Jubilee to take third and the first Youth B.

For the final event of the evening the seniors lined up for an unknown distance race and right from the start the race was lined out as various riders tried attacks. After 5 laps and the field starting to bunch up the bell was rung for the final lap and coming into the finishing straight it looked to be a battle between Lee Povey and Brock Duncumb-Rogers for first place, and on the line it was Lee taking his first victory of the season from Brock. Third place went to Richard Bailey.

After two weeks of racing the Senior standings are led by Brock Duncumb-Rogers who has an 8 point lead over Ashley Dennis with Paul Barnard a further 11 points back in third place. The Youth A rankings are led by Jake Deakin with Connor Murphy in second place and Gabriel Parle third. The Youth B sees OllyPriddle leading from Spencer Thomas and Zak Corum-Haines. In the Youth C Isaac Wright leads from Joe Hill with Bethany Lewis in third place. Youth D is led by Bradley Burke from Rahul FortescueTalwar and Miranda Wright. Finally in the Youth E rankings Rory Burke leads from Samuel Jaques and George Abbott-Stacey.
