Welwyn Friday Night Track League

Story posted September 6, by Peter Waghorn

With just two more meetings to go, a number of riders were keen to get among the points. Rod Kelson opened the proceedings in winning the 10 lap B Scratch from fast finisher Ryan Owens. Kelson added a second place in the 10 lap Block Handicap behind Welwyn's Ben Smith scoring his first win of the season with a well timed attack in the final lap. Ryan Owens, who now leads the Group B series, made sure of the 10 lap Points race with Jon Munns second and Rod Kelson third.

In the Group A senior events, John McClelland won the 10 lap Scratch and Block Pursuit and now has an unassailable lead in the A series. The Devil went to Robert Cox from Vince Divine and Phil Lisher. The 10 mile, the final event of the evening, was ridden at a fast but steady pace with few attacks. The field came down to 18 riders in the closing laps and at the finish John McClelland took the victory with Mark Smith just getting the better of Trevor Burke on the line with Robert Cox in fourth place.

The large group of Youth riders were split into two groups – Ollie Fensom from Spalding won the Group B/C Scratch and Devil but was pushed hard by Welwyn's Chris Hodges and Daniel Maynard. Newcomer Luke Morgan gaining confidence each week, won the B/C four lap Handicap by inches in a tight finish with Chris Hodges with Jonathan Chapman leading in the remaining riders for third place.

In the C/D Youth group, James Parrish took the four lap Scratch from series leader Will Raymond but the longmarkers won the two three lap Handicaps – Tristan Rayner taking the first and Tom Durkin the second. Twenty six riders were lined up around the track for the final four lap Handicap with Jake Howes the back marker. Lucy Harper took over the lead with under a lap to go and held on to win from Luke Morgan and James Parrish for a fine win.
