2010 European Masters Track Championships

July 27 - 31 2010 | Manchester Velodrome | Event Press Release

Day 3 Report

The Men’s Points Race events again provided the highlight of the third day of competition as Jimmy Rutherford turned in another gritty performance to move up from the Silver medal he won in 2009. With only 15 points going into the final sprint, Rutherford lay in second place behind GB's Chris Davis and with 2009 winner Steve Davies close by. After taking second in the penultimate sprint, Rutherford carried on his effort, causing panic behind as Davies enlisted the help of club mate Andrew Donaldson to try and claw back his fellow countryman, who took the 5 points on offer for the final sprint, and the Gold Medal.

In the Mens 50-54 Points event, Sixten Wackstrom of Finland, riding his first Masters Championships, dominated the event in a similar fashion. After being badly placed in the first sprint, Wackstrom took the next two sprints but was relegated from the third for riding off the track. After a sitting out the fourth, he took off alone, as the rest of the field scrambled together with 2009 Bronze medallist Didier Ramet chasing the points to claim him the medal.

Wackstrom's strength though saw him finish a quarter lap up with Ramet claiming the three points for second and the Silver medal. In the Men’s Pursuit events, Tim Lawson of Great Britain moved up a category from last year but still claimed Gold in the Men’s 40-44 Pursuit, relegating last years winner, Peter Ettles of GB to silver. In the younger category Lawson had left behind, Austria's Wolfgang Klotzman stepped up to the mark to take the Gold from Oliver Davies.
