Dudley Grand Prix Track Day 2

Story posted July 13, 2010; Event: Sunday 11th  July; by Geoff Dingley

The great weather from Day 1 of this two day meeting returned for the second day of the Dudley Grand Prix at Manor Abbey Stadium, Halesowen.  Previous event organiser, and current Halesowen A & CC Club Chairman, Martin Bridgwood, reported that this was the first time in four years that the event has avoided rain spoiling at least one day.

The opening event, the British Cycling Women's Omnium – 500m Time Trial  saw three riders going under 40 seconds in blustery conditions. Charlene Joiner (City of Edinburgh CC 39.85), Janet Birkmyre (Orbea for Goodness Shakes 39.58) and on her home track, Helen Scott (Halesowen A&CC 39.29).

Open Keirin
An innovation from last year proved popular again with 19 riders as both sprinters and endurance riders opted to try the motor paced event. With the first two from each heat through to the final and 3rd and 4th to the minor final, the sprints in each heat were keenly contested. Callum Skinner  (City of Edinburgh RC), Tom Powell (Newcastle RC 2001) and  Kian Emadi (Tunstall Wheelers) won their respective heats and were the leading contenders in the final with Callum Skinner securing the win from Tom in 2nd and Kian finishing 3rd.

Mean while the main contenders for the Billy Jones 10 mile were stretching their legs in the supporting endurance races. Results from these were:

Open Course de Prime
Thomas Gregory     Halesowen A & CC    4laps
Robert Lambton    Brooks Cycles    3laps
Adam Duggleby    iride.co.uk        2laps
Neil Withington     VC St Raphael    1 lap

Open Scratch
1. John McClelland    Agiskoviner
2. Bryan Taylor    VC Londres
3. Adam Duggleby    iride.co.uk

Open Devil
1. Alistair Rutherford    Science in Sport
2. Adam Duggleby    iride.co.uk
3. Robert Lambton    Brooks Cycles

Women's Omnium
This round of the British Cycling Women's Omnium was turning into a battle between two local riders,  Emily Kay (Halesowen A & CC) who won the 2km Pursuit with a time of 2.40.58, some 6 seconds clear of her nearest rival. She had also won the Scratch race and finished in second place in the Sprints which drew her level with team mate Helen Scott (2009 National Track Champs Team Sprint Gold medallist).

L-R: Emily Kay, Helen Scott and Charlene Joiner.

The Points race was left to decide the result where Helen was heard to say when she came off the track "I really had to work hard for that" which was a great credit to her young rival. The top three overall were:

1. Helen Scott     Halesowen A & CC     9 points
2. Emily Kay    Halesowen A & CC    10 points
3. Charline Joiner    City of Edinburgh RC    20 points

Billy Jones 10 mile Race
The Billy Jones 10 mile race, a round of the British Cycling Hard Track Endurance League, was kindly sponsored by local business man and ex club member and track cyclist, Martin Hill of Martin Hill Interiors Ltd. The 40 lap race quickly saw action when with 34 laps to go, Tighernach Murphy (Irish Development (Track)Team), Adam Duggleby (i ride.co.uk), Tom Gregory Halesowen (A & CC) and John Brearley (Scunthorpe Poly CC) were active off the front.

John Brearley and Tighernach Murphy  persisted with the attack and held the bunch at half a lap for some time until John Brearley pressed on to try and bridge the gap dropping Tighernach Murphy. With 28 laps remaining, there was a counter attack from Adam Duggleby, Alistair Rutherford (Science in Sport) and Karl Freeman (Team Corley Cycles).

The pressure continued with Adam Duggleby and Alistair Rutherford holding the bunch at half a lap and a chasing group including Matt Gittins (AWCycles.co.uk), Matthew Fenton (Cottingham Couriers RT), Robert Lambton (Brookes Cycles), Tom Gregory (Halesowen A&CC), Bryan Taylor (VC Londres) and Neil Withington (VC St Raphael).

With 12 laps to go, the pair of Adam Duggleby and Alistair Rutherford lapped the field and with just 8 laps to go, a further five of the chasing group also made it to the back of the bunch to gain a lap. The bunch then settled down for a few laps before the inevitable charge for the line where the strength and experience of Bryan Taylor brought him to the line for a 3rd win of the Billy Jones Trophy.

L-R: 2nd Alistair Rutherford, Bryan Taylor (1st) and 3rd Adam Duggleby.

The senior events were again complemented with youth and freewheeler racing. All the results will be posted on the club website over the next day or two, halesowencycling.net

Halesowen A & CC would like to thank all sponsors, officials, helpers and competitors for making the event so successful.
