DHL Grand Prix of Edinburgh

Story posted June 14, 2010, by Colin Renton, Photos by Brian Annable

French teenager Julien Palma turned on the style to take the honours in the DHL Grand Prix of Edinburgh sprint at Meadowbank Velodrome. The 17 year old was however given a stern test by a quartet bidding for a place in the Scotland squad for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Among that group was City of Edinburgh trio Bruce Croall, Callum Skinner and John Paul who occupied the fourth, fifth and sixth slots after an afternoon of intense competition.

But it was Scottish qualified Anglo Chris Pritchard (Science in Sport) who pushed Palma hardest. The 27 year old, who is based in Sheffield, was the fastest qualifier and his time of 10.93 seconds pipped Palma to top seeding by two hundredths. Pritchard, Palma, Benjamin Edelin of France and Paul all took wins in the first round, while Paul’s City of Edinburgh colleagues Croall and Skinner progressed via the repechages.

Round 2 produced repeat wins for Pritchard, Palma and Edelin, with Croall completing the semi final line up after ousting his colleagues in the repechage. Pritchard saw off Croall and Palma won the battle of the French riders to secure his place in the final. In the French-Anglo final, the Frenchman looked impressive in taking the first leg and second time up, he timed his effort to perfection, catching Pritchard on the line after the Sheffield-based rider had appeared set to take the victory.

Palma, whose main objective for the season is the World Junior Championships in Italy (August), then showed his versatility when he took the honours in the 15 kilometre Scratch. Charline Joiner (City of Edinburgh) was peerless in the Women’s Omnium, winning all five disciplines, while James Smith (Dooleys RT) had a fruitful afternoon in the endurance events and there were impressive efforts from veterans Andy Laing (Musselburgh RCC) and Ivor Reid (Clachnacuddin CC).

After the first day’s racing was contested in fine conditions, the weather deteriorated overnight and Sunday’s programme was washed out.
