Welwyn Friday Night Track League
21st August, 2009; Thanks to Peter Waghorn.
Despite the threat of rain and the blustery breeze, the racing was fast and furious in the two senior categories. In the opening A 10 lap scratch, Alex Wise and Tom Gallacher attacked at half distance and opened up a gap which they held to the finish with John McClelland leading in the bunch. In the 10 lap Block Pursuit for Odds and Evens the ‘Odds’, led by Tony Gibb were soon decimated by the pace and were down to four riders, the ‘Evens’ led by John McClelland were also down to 4 riders and as Tony Gibb went away on his own to win with 2 laps left, the Evens had just two riders remaining. The A Points race was run at a cracking pace with each sprint hotly contested - John McClelland won from team mate Joel Sewart with Jim Lewis and Alex Wise taking the minor places.
Dan Snow won the Senior B 10 lap scratch in a bunch finish and added the Devil for good measure. Neil Rutter was also on good form winning the 10 lap block Handicap and picking up second places in the scratch and Points races. The closing 10 mile with a field of 45 riders saw a break of 5 riders get away with 20 laps to go, additional riders got across in ones and twos making a group of 11 with 10 laps left. An attack by Joel Stewart with 5 laps to go left 8 riders to contest the final few laps. Tony Gibb sat up to save his energy for the National Derny Finals at Newport the following day. John McClelland took the win from Joel Stewart with Ed Checkley third in 21-03.
Youth numbers were less than usual due to holidays and the Newport Youth events. However Ollie Fensom twice turned the tables on Joseph Fry who had dominated the Youth B/C group all season. Joseph got one back in winning the 500m Handicap. The Youth C/D/E group produced some tight finishes in the handicap races – needing the camera to resolve the 500m Handicap as three riders crossed together – Simon Bird getting the verdict over Tom Street and Abigail Coles. Harry Durkin won the final 4 lap B/C/D/E handicap as the next four riders closed to within a bike length at the finish of 4 interesting laps from a field of 15 riders.
