Welwyn Track League

A calm sunny evening and a strong entry produced some high speed competition in the senior competition. Alex Anderson opened the proceedings with an attacking break with just over a lap to go in the Senior B 10 lap scratch which he held on to win by a few metres aided by vocal help from the local Welwyn supporters. Tony Gibb took the 10 lap A scratch closely followed by Bryan Taylor and Joel Stewart.

The 10 lap Even numbered Handicap, which set the A group starting 350m behind the B group, was a cracking race as the  three young Welwyn B group riders set off at breakneck speed and held off the A group chasers for almost nine laps with a bit of help from Simon Best (N Road). At the finish, Joel Stewart took a hard earned victory in a time of 5-44 (30mph). Joel then added the A group Points race to his evenings tally.

The senior 10 mile started slowly but as the pace built up a three man break of Eric Gowland, Mike Wragg and Joel Stewart escaped with 10 laps remaining building up a lead of 100m. Tony Gibb and Rob Cox joined them with six to go but soon after Gowland and then Cox and finally Wragg lost contact with four laps left. Gibb and Stewart finished in that order in 21 minutes flat with Taylor and George Olive picking up the minor places.

In the Youth series George Bateman and Sam Gilzean shared the spoils in the Youth A/B group while Joseph Fry extended his overall lead in the Youth B/C category. The C/D/E group produced some entertaining racing with fast finishing Daniel Maynard (CC Ashwell) picking up three wins. Connor Woodford showed improving form with two second places. The closing four lap Handicap saw Harry Durkin beat the handicapper with a fine win with Rebecca Maynard closing up in second place with the diminutive Abigail Coles third.
