Bos Delivers in DHL Sprint

Meadowbank Velodrome was bathed in orange as riders from the Netherlands filled the top three places in the DHL Edinburgh Grand Prix sprint.

Yorick Bos added his name to an illustrious list of riders to have won the event with an impressive performance that started when he clocked the fastest qualifying time of 11.30 seconds and concluded when he squeezed out his elder brother Patrick in a closely contested final.

They were joined on the podium by Jaime van de Lught, who beat Bruce Croall (City of Edinburgh), the last remaining challenger to the Dutch domination after progressing via the repechage, in the third place ride off.

In his first round race, the eventual winner saw off his countryman Michiel Spannemaker and Jamie Bremner (City of Edinburgh).

Two rain interruptions meant subsequent rounds were settled on a single ride and wins over Jeige Bisschop and Croall earned him a place in the final. There he lined up against his brother who, at 21, is two years older than Yorick.

Patrick had ousted John Paul (Team Terminator) – the teenage Scot who was making his first competitive appearance on home territory – and Irishman Michael Mulcahy before beating Spannemaker and van de Lught.

The siblings battled it out around the final lap and Patrick made the first move but Yorick had the better form rounding the final bend and edged past to claim victory. He said, “It was great racing – a pity about the rain. I had a great final against my brother. Fortunately I won and I am now on the trophy with some great names like Jason Kenny and Craig MacLean. I have made a lot of progress over the last six months. Sometimes I win and sometimes my brother wins – today it was my turn.”

The opening day also featured a Scottish record for Alison Chisholm (Edinburgh RC0 and an East of Scotland age group best by Rosie Yeats (Edinburgh Racers). Chisholm was hoping to use the event to gauge her form ahead of next month’s British Masters and was delighted that her time of 37.96 seconds – around 0.8 seconds better than her previous best – erased Kate Cullen’s previous time.

“I hadn’t done a 500 at all this year and it was really in preparation for the British Masters in July. I am hoping to post a really good time there so this is a bonus”, she said. And she confirmed she is in good shape when she added a win in the Keirin.

And there were impressive wins in the endurance events for Finlay Young (Velo Ecosse) and Kevin Barclay (Endura Racing), who saw off a 24 man field to take the honours in the Devil. Sunday’s reshuffled programme started with the Scottish Youths’ 15 kilometre points championship. Paul, who looked composed and mature in his attitude to racing throughout the weekend, took the first sprint but, together with the others in the field, was caught out by a well judged move from Stuart McCluskey (VC Glasgow South) after only 12 laps.

He built a substantial lead and looked set to gain a lap before the pursuers belatedly saw the danger and worked together to gradually reel in the escapee. He was caught with 26 of the 60 laps to race but continued to chase the points. Meanwhile, Paul continued to build his tally and had the title in the bag before the final sprint, which McCluskey won to clinch silver from Greig Brown (Glasgow Nightingale), who had ridden a measured race and timed his efforts well.

Admitting that he had not targeted the title, Paul, who moved south five years ago, produced a fine effort and returned home to Oxfordshire with a Scottish title in his luggage and left behind the impression that he is a rider with a big future. “This is the first time I’ve ever raced in Scotland”, he said. “I thought I may as well have a go at it but I’m not an endurance rider so I just decided to stick in and see how it went. And it went well.”

He will make a return trip to Meadowbank for the Scottish Track Championships in August and, over the longer term, he has an eye on selection for London 2012 and a definite goal of a place at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games two years later. He later added a win over fellow teenager Callum Skinner (City of Edinburgh) in the Keirin, with a rider at the opposite end of the age spectrum, evergreen Ivor Reid (Clachnacuddin CC), taking third spot to add to wins in the Devil and 8 kilometre events for B riders.

The heats of the derny-paced event were marred by a crash involving Kate Cullen (RTC Groenewoud), which left her dazed but apparently not seriously injured although there were several anxious moments as she lay motionless at the side of the track. The final was a compelling race with VC St Raphael pair Chris Bush and Alan Peet looking working their way to the front before Ross Crook (Edinburgh RC) made a superbly judged late charge to storm home for a convincing win.

Daisy Sherwood (City of Edinburgh) took to spot in the women’s 5 kilometre scratch and, just as it appeared the programme would be completed without a stoppage, the heavens opened during the final event – a disappointing finish to a weekend of great racing.

The strength of the Dundee Discovery Juniors club was underlined in the Youths Omnium, where Robbie Spence took the honours ahead of his team mates Eleanor Corkhill and Charlie Wilson.
