Welwyn Friday Night Track League

- Welwyn Track League (June 12)A warm breeze free evening produced the fastest racing of the year in the Senior Group A category with non stop attacking the feature of the racing. In the 10 lap Block Handicap A, the four groups set off at a cracking pace with the field coming together with three laps remaining. At the line, George Olive out paced James Jackson in the fastest time ever – the 4.6 kms covered in 5-35. Newcomer Boyd Roberts won the 10 lap Points and added a third place in the opening 10 lap scratch won by John McClelland. The large contingent of Senior B riders, reinforced by a number of quick Youth A riders, saw Ed Bird complete a clean sweep of the 10 lap scratch the ‘odds and evens’ 10 lap Block Handicap and the ‘odd numbers Devil. Tom Boulton won the Even numbers Devil and notched up second places in the scratch and Block Pursuit. The Senior 10 mile, with 60 riders on the track was run at a fast but steady pace. Attacks were numerous with Alex Wise involved in virtually every attack as the ‘non sprinters made every effort to establish a worthwhile break. All the attacks were hunted down by a slowly depleted bunch and a group of 40 were left to fight it out as the bell sounded. George Olive looked to be in a winning position with 200m to go but at the line it was John McClelland and James Jackson who led George across the line in 21–07 for the 10 miles. The Youth events were well attended and produced some good competitive racing. In the Youth A/B group, honours were spread around while Joseph Fry cleaned up the Youth B/C group. Youth C/D/E was as ever keenly contested especially in the handicap events. Abigail Coles was willed on by the spectators in the four lap combined handicap and was only overtaken in the last few metres by Harry Bellars from Spalding.
