Report: Day 5 at the U23/Junior European Track Championships

The penultimate day's racing at the U23/Junior European Track Championships saw some exciting results from Great Britain's Academy and Olympic Development Programme riders.

The day's racing started off well for Great Britain's Olympic Development Programme riders when a paring of newly crowned double European Champion in the Team Pursuit and Scratch, Lucy Garner and sprinter Danielle Khan won a silver medal in the Junior Women's Team Sprint. The GB pair clocked a time of 36.158 to get them a place in the major final but in the ride off for the gold, they faced the strength of Russian duo. The gold was taken by Russia, leaving Great Britain in the silver medal spot. Victoria Williamson also clocked a time of 36.255 in the U23 500m Time Trial, placing her 5th overall.

Saturday's action also saw the concluding rounds of the Junior Men's Omnuim. Olympic Development rider, Jonathan Dibben was level on Points with the Russian rider Sazanov going into the final event, the 1km Time Trial. Dibben knew he needed the win to secure the Bronze and with that he clocked the fastest time, finishing in a time of 1:03.885. A time which, was 1.5 seconds clear of the rest of the field and incidenatlly one which would have given him a silver medal in the Junior Mens 1km TT competition.

Today's action sees the conclusion of the Junior Women's Omnium, as well as the Keirin for both men and women in the U23 and Junior categories. The cometition will conclude with the Men's Junior and U23 Madison. We will be reporting on all the action from Portugal in our daily round ups throughout the championships.
