Brooks Cycles Track League July 29

Story posted August 3, thanks to Chris Pyatt

The latest round of the Brooks Cycles Track League at Newcastle under Lyme saw a great turnout of riders with a number of very welcome new faces on a night where there was a large number of regular rider absences due to the European Masters. The best race of the night was the 10 mile Scratch where the A Class riders started 2 1/2 laps down on the B riders.

The A Class riders set about this task quickly, bringing the race together with 16 laps to go. The pace of the race stayed high with a number of attacks which eliminated a number of riders and there was a group of 15 riders contesting the final dash to the line with the judges struggling to separate the first two.

The victory by a tyre width went to first time rider this year, and brother of Great Britain international sprinter Matt, Robert Crampton (Wills Wheels) from A Class League leader Matthew Rotherham (Sportcity Velo). In third place was another newcomer Jack Penrice of Sportcity Velo. In the other A Class events,  Matthew Rotherham got his revenege winning the opening 8 lap Scratch from Robert Crampton.

Another Junior, Lewis Balyckyi of Wallis CHH, took a good win in the 8 lap point’s race. In the Keiren league, six riders made it through to the final with  Matthew Rotherham taking the win with a fine burst of speed over the final 200m from another Junior Robert Lambton (Brooks Cycles).

The B Class events saw League Leader Ryan Whatmough (Shepherd Cycles) continue to amass the points with wins in the Devil, Win and Out and the first B rider in the ten mile Scratch. Neil Cummins also scored well with three second places in the 8 lap Scratch, Win and out and 10 mile Scratch. The other race winner was Jessica Crampton (Sportcity Velo) who won impressively in the 8 lap Scratch race and then went on to win the Ladies sprint event from Hannah Layland (VC St Raphael) and Louise Higgs (Newcastle RC 2001).

The youth events saw a large turnout of 15 riders with some close racing. Louis Preston (Lyme RC) won the opening 400m TT from team mate Sean Mayer. Thirteen year old Sallie Birchall (Lyme RC) used her long mark to good effect in the block handicap to win from her team mate Liam Zwetschinkow. The Team Sprint saw the home straight win by a bike length in a race that yo-yoed throughout. The final Scratch race saw a close finish with Joel Partington taking a great win from Will Thomas (Sportcity Velo)

All riders please note that there will be cash prizes at the final league event on the 2nd September with the floodlights being used to extend the nights racing. All current and any new riders are welcome.
