The Great Britain Cycling Team is “looking forward to getting stuck into racing” said Para-Cycling head coach Jon Norfolk as the 2016 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships gets underway in Montichiari, Italy.

A 21 strong squad will be looking to lay down a marker ahead of the Paralympic Games in Rio in September. The event is the final opportunity for the squad to gain qualification points ahead of the Paralympic Games in Brazil this summer – as well as an opportunity to defend and win rainbow jerseys and world titles.

The squad will be led by Dame Sarah Storey and Jody Cundy, alongside the tandem pairings of Sophie Thornhill and Helen Scott and Neil Fachie and Pete Mitchell, who will all be keen to retain their rainbow stripes. They're joined by a number of younger riders, many of whom are looking to make their mark on the international stage by reaching a world championships podium for the first time.

“The preparation in Manchester over the last few weeks and the last few days in Italy has run really smoothly and we’re looking forward to getting stuck into racing on Thursday.

“While we do have some experienced riders in the squad, this a really young and talented team, which will stand us in good stead not only this week, but looking towards Rio and the next Paralympic cycle.

The team was also wished well by minister for disabled people, Justin Tomlinson, MP:

“I’m sure our award winning para-cyclists will speed ahead in their final Paralympic qualifier to defend their titles and bring home a host of medals – putting them in a great place for Rio. I wish them the best of luck for their weekend of racing.”
