François Pervis, Anna Meares, Lasse Norman Hansen and Kristina Vogel are just a few of the riders set to converge at London’s Lee Valley VeloPark at the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships next week (2-6 March).
The track stars will join over 350 of the world’s best cyclists including Great Britain’s Sir Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, Jason Kenny, Owain Doull, Laura Trott and Becky James, to compete for the coveted world champion rainbow jerseys.
The event will be the biggest UCI Track Cycling World Championships in the modern era, with over 50,000 tickets sold. Founded in 1893, the prestigious competition has been the annual pinnacle for competitive track cyclists.
Now returning to the UK for the first time in eight years, the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships will see international rivalries reignited at Lee Valley VeloPark’s velodrome – the venue of the London 2012 Summer Olympics.
Great Britain Cycling Team technical director, Shane Sutton, said: “One week away from competition the riders are very much focused on the challenge ahead.
“It’s great to see Ed Clancy included on the squad and that’s testament to the hard work of the Performance Support Team who have ably led his rehabilitation following injury.
“Winning is always a key objective for any sports team, so I’m expecting strong performances from the team and spectators will be guaranteed world-class competition.”
Looking to match his team pursuit gold medal at the 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, Ed Clancy said: “Our last team pursuit title was four years ago ahead of the Australians and New Zealanders in Melbourne, and we’re determined to go out fighting to be on the top step of the winner’s podium next week, especially as we’re on home soil.
"The team pursuit is one of track cycling’s most iconic events so there’s going to be some great racing.”
Billed as Britain’s premier international sporting event of 2016, the UCI Track Cycling World Championships will give ticket holders the chance to see sporting history in the making and experience the famous velodrome roar which lifted British riders to an incredible nine Olympic medals in 2012.
British Cycling’s director of cycle sport and membership, Jonny Clay, said: “This year’s track season has been one to remember, and the ultimate goal for riders is to compete at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships. One week out, our focus is firmly on the competition and hosting the biggest and best event of the modern era.”
